Team India skipper Shubman Gill is leading from the front with a stellar knock under pressure during the second innings of the ongoing fourth Test against England at Old Trafford in Manchester. The right-handed batter has crossed the 700-run mark in the ongoing five-match Test series against England.
India got off to a disastrous start in their second innings, losing both openers for zero in the very first over. With no runs on the board and two wickets down, England looked poised to seal the match on Day 4. But KL Rahul and Shubman Gill steadied the innings with a stand that kept India’s hopes of a draw alive.
Shubman Gill Completes 700-Run Mark in Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy
Shubman Gill and KL Rahul played through two sessions on Day 4 (Saturday, July 26) without losing any further wickets. They ended the day at 174/2, still trailing by 137 runs. Gill, who remained unbeaten on 78, crossed the 700-run mark in the series.
The 25-year-old became only the third Indian cricketer to score over 700 runs in a bilateral Test series. Sunil Gavaskar was the first to do so in 1971 against the West Indies and repeated the feat against the same opposition in 1978/79. Yashasvi Jaiswal also crossed the mark against England last year.

Shubman Gill Becomes Second Indian Captain to Score 700+ Runs in a Test Series
Shubman Gill has made a remarkable impact in his debut series as India’s Test captain. He broke several major milestones with the bat. The batter became the first Asian to score over 700 runs in a Test series in England - an extraordinary feat given the challenging conditions.
Gill is also just the second Indian captain to reach the 700-run mark in a series. Notably, he joined an elite group by becoming only the third visiting captain in Test history to amass 700 or more runs in a series on English soil. His form has been crucial for India as they look to fight back in the match.
Virat Kohli Never Reached the 700-Run Mark in a Single Test Series
Virat Kohli never reached the 700-run mark in a single Test series. His best performance came during the 2014-15 Border-Gavaskar Trophy in Australia, where he scored 692 runs, including four centuries. That remained his highest tally in a series before he retired from Test cricket ahead of the England tour.
Meanwhile, Shubman Gill edged closer to a century during the ongoing match. Batting on 81, he lofted a delivery from Ben Stokes through the covers, with Ollie Pope nearly pulling off a stunning catch.
However, the ball slipped through Pope’s hands. Gill has already scored two centuries in the series, one of which came during India's only win so far.
