The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has named a 15-member squad for the upcoming Asia Cup 2025, which is set to begin on September 9. Young India batter Shubman Gill has been named as vice-captain of the side despite concerns over his place for the eight-team tournament in the UAE.
The BCCI Men’s Selection Committee, headed by Ajit Agarkar, revealed the Asia Cup 2025 squad on Tuesday, August 19. Suryakumar Yadav will captain the Men in Blue after recovering from sports hernia surgery. Senior players Jasprit Bumrah and Hardik Pandya will provide experienced support to the team.
Shubman Gill Appointed Vice-Captain of India’s Asia Cup 2025 Squad
Shubman Gill has been named vice-captain of India’s squad for the Asia Cup 2025. He secured his place following a stellar IPL 2025 season, scoring 650 runs at a strike rate of nearly 156 and leading the Gujarat Titans (GT) to the knockout stage.
Gill had been out of India’s T20I plans since August 2024, with Abhishek Sharma and Sanju Samson establishing themselves as the preferred openers.
The 25-year-old has also excelled in other formats, leading India to a 2-2 draw in England in his debut Test series as captain. He played a key role in the 2023 ODI World Cup final and the 2025 Champions Trophy triumph.
Fans React to Shubman Gill’s Appointment as India T20I Vice-Captain
Indian cricket fans have expressed mixed reactions to Shubman Gill's appointment as the new T20I vice-captain. Some believe Shubman deserved the role, while others question his selection in the squad.

Gautam Gambhir is just jealous of him. There is not even a single reason to drop Shreyas Iyer. pic.twitter.com/ogknDVE3mS
Let's laugh at everyone who really thought Shubman Gill the Test Captain, would be dropped from T20I. 🤣🤣

There were so many people here who even questioned his place in the T20I team. These jokers have no idea how BCCI runs. He was always going to become the Vice-Captain.
Shreyas Iyer & Yashasvi Jaiswal couldn't find a place in India's T20I squad coz they failed to invest in PR the way Shubman Gill did. Indian Cricket requires you to have best PR & good connections with media people in order to play in Indian team.

VC in ODIs all set to become Captain.
VC in T20Is.

Gill as a VC is an absolute big blunder by BCCI to sell Gill in T20Is as well. Abhishek, Sanju, Tilak and Surya were the perfect top 4 for team India now Gill will create insecurity among the top 4. Otherwise the team looks decent. Exciting tournament coming up. #AsiaCup pic.twitter.com/NS1Nj5NZXV

Yashasvi Jaiswal, Shreyas Iyer, and Prasidh Krishna Omitted from India’s Asia Cup 2025 Squad
Jasprit Bumrah and Jitesh Sharma, who last featured in a T20I in January 2024, returned to the squad. Meanwhile, Yashasvi Jaiswal and Shreyas Iyer were left out. Fast bowlers Mohammed Shami, Mohammed Siraj, and IPL 2025 purple cap winner Prasidh Krishna were also omitted by the selection committee.
India will open their campaign against the UAE on September 9. They will face Pakistan on September 14 and conclude the group stage against Oman on September 19. With six months remaining until the next T20 World Cup in India and Sri Lanka, the Asia Cup will be played in the T20 format.
The BCCI is the host of the event, but it will be held at a neutral venue in the UAE. A total of eight teams, India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Hong Kong, UAE, and Oman, will compete for the trophy.
