India National Cricket Team captain Shubman Gill had a disappointing start to his Ranji Trophy 2026-27 campaign after scoring just one run for Punjab against Chhattisgarh on Sunday, October 18 at the PCA Cricket Stadium in New Chandigarh.
The Test and ODI captain failed to make an impact and returned to the dressing room after facing only five balls. Gill was earlier stunned by missing Punjab’s Ranji Trophy 2026-27 season opener against the Assam side. That game ended in a draw. Earlier, Shubman Gill to pay for 4-5 personal net bowlers in NZ, face Chhattisgarh in Ranji Trophy.
Shubman Gill's Ranji Trophy return turns into nightmare
Shubman Gill returned to the Punjab squad for the second Ranji Trophy 2026-27 game, hoping to get valuable red-ball practice ahead of India's upcoming Test series against New Zealand, but failed to make an impact with the bat against Chhattisgarh.
The Chhattisgarh left-arm spinner Ajay Mandal delivered the big blow by bowling Gill out for just one run in New Chandigarh. On the third ball of the 27th over, Mandal bowled a sharp delivery that beat Gill's bat and crashed into the stumps, leaving the Indian captain stunned.
The right-handed batter could face only five deliveries before throwing his wicket. His early dismissal came as a disappointment for the Indian skipper, who would have wanted to make the most of his Ranji appearance ahead of the upcoming three-match Test series against New Zealand.
