India’s Test and ODI captain, Shubman Gill, has finally broken his silence after being left out of the national squad for the upcoming ICC T20 World Cup 2026. Shubman Gill’s response has won a lot of respect and hearts, as the young batter chose dignity over drama.
No Drama, Only Dignity: Shubman Gill reacts to ICC T20 World Cup 2026 omission
Ahead of the three-match ODI series against New Zealand, which begins on January 11 in Vadodara, Gill made it clear that he is fully backing the team picked for the upcoming ICC T20 World Cup 2026 despite the disappointment of missing a second straight global event.
Instead of questioning the Indian selectors’ call, Gill accepted the decision calmly and sent his best wishes to the national side for the global event, which shows his maturity and team-first thinking. With the focus now shifting to the ODI series against New Zealand, Gill is determined to let his bat do the talking after the much-debated T20I snub.
Shubman Gill told reporters in Vadodara: “I respect the selectors' decision. All the best to the team for the T20 World Cup. I am where I have to be and whatever is written in my destiny no one can take that from me. A player always believes he will try his best for the country and the selectors have taken their decision.”

No fifty in 15 games: Shubman Gill’s T20I struggles lead to his snub
Shubman Gill’s T20I journey has taken an unexpected turn, and it has caught almost everyone by surprise. The 26-year-old was seen as a key part of India’s plans in the shortest format when he entered the T20I setup as vice-captain during the Asia Cup 2025.

However, things did not go as planned. Gill struggled to make an impact with the bat and failed to deliver the big innings expected from a top-order player. In the 15 T20I matches he played after returning to the side following over 12 months, the Indian ODI captain did not score even a single fifty, which put him under pressure.
By the end of those 15 matches, Gill’s numbers disappointed one and all, as he could muster only 219 runs at an average of 24.25 and a strike rate of 137.26. While the strike rate was decent, the lack of consistency and match-winning knocks became hard to ignore, especially in a format where quick and impactful runs matter the most.
Gill's T20I Numbers
Given his form, the Indian selection committee led by Ajit Agarkar has decided to drop the right-handed batter entirely from the T20I side and announced that Sanju Samson will return as an opener in the upcoming T20I series against New Zealand as well as the ICC T20 World Cup 2026.
Gill has so far played 36 T20Is for India, scoring 869 runs at an average of 28.03 and a strike rate of 138.59. Following the upcoming ODI series against New Zealand, he will shift his focus to the upcoming IPL 2026, where he will captain Gujarat Titans.
