Indian captain Shubman Gill did a commendable job winning the second Test at Edgbaston, as he became the first Asian skipper to achieve this remarkable feat. This has forced even the former England skipper Nasser Hussain to praise the Indian star.
After scoring 1014 runs across both innings of the Birmingham Test, India claimed their biggest win over a team outside India, as they won the match by a huge margin of 336 runs.
Nasser Hussain was among the first players to largely criticize the 25-year-old newly appointed Indian skipper, Shubman Gill. The criticism came after India lost the first Test in Leeds, as he said Gill never looked like a captain with constant inputs from Rishabh Pant and KL Rahul.
Nasser Hussain has now backed Shubman Gill after Edgbaston Test
Nasser Hussain criticized Gill's captaincy after the conclusion of the first Test at Headingley. He said:
"I thought I saw someone just finding his way, honestly. You've got to be very careful in the first Test match, the people he's taken over from, Kohli, and then Rohit Sharma. I thought he didn't quite have that on-field aura as the names I mentioned there."
However, after the Edgbaston Test win, marking his difference with Virat Kohli's captaincy, Hussain has hailed Shubman Gill's 'calm and composed' attitude on the field during his entire time on the field as India's skipper in Edgbaston.
"He's always going to be calm and composed. You just listened to that interview. He's got a very low heartbeat. So he's not going to be a Kohli-type character. He's got a low heartbeat, but that can help," he said on Sky Sports.
"Look at this crowd here today. Look at all of India watching on. You may need someone just to calm the team,” added the former English player.
Nasser Hussain also lauds Akash Deep's end-swap, calling it a 'masterstroke'
During the proceedings of Day 5 of the second Test, Indian captain Shubman Gill made a controversial call as he asked his most successful bowler of the game, Akash Deep, to swap ends with the new ball despite having picked two wickets from the same end.
Akash Deep's end swap shocked Nasser Hussain, as no captain would have thought that, but Gill made the shocking change of ends. Akash Deep picked four more wickets as he bowled from this end and ended the innings with six wickets at Edgbaston.
“He did some subtle things that we wouldn't do. Akash Deep bowled beautifully this end. This morning we thought he was going to start this end. He started him up at the end, and it worked. So there were tactical things that he did in the game as well that really worked,” said Nasser Hussain on the probable move.

Shubman Gill had done it right with a shed of runs
The Indian skipper has been largely praised by Nasser Hussain for his tactical move; he has been said to need some help from fellow seniors like Ravindra Jadeja and KL Rahul, but despite all, he is considered the next-generation skipper for India due to his composed attitude.
Shubman Gill scored a pile of runs as he has built onto 430 runs in the match, after scoring a double century in the first inning and following it with a 161 in the second inning of play.
“The most important thing is to get runs. That's his number one job, and he's got a shed load of runs,” said the former England veteran.
