Ahead of the India vs West Indies 3rd ODI match in New Chandigarh, Shubman Gill explains the influence of the two stalwarts of the game, Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma, on his captaincy. Instead of taking decisions on his own, Shubman is kind of a skipper who loves to hear opinions from the others as well.
Shubman Gill has been in tremendous form across the formats since taking over the captaincy of the India national cricket team. He is captain for the Test and ODI formats, and in both of the formats, he got support from multiple senior cricketers in both batting and captaincy.
Team India remains undefeated in the ODI series against West Indies
In the lead-up to the 2027 ODI World Cup, when every performance is crucial for the team and for every individual player, Gill explains how helpful it is for him to have both Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma, two former India captains, by his side for the One Day Internationals.
India has already secured a series with a 2-0 lead in the three-match ODI series, with an opportunity to hand West Indies a 3-0 whitewash. In the previous match, Shubman Gill registered a double century, while Rohit Sharma claimed a ton. In the series opener, Virat Kohli and Gill were the two centurions for the Men in Blue.
Shubman Gill explains the importance of Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma
In the pre-match press conference, the India captain said that he feels very fortunate to have Virat and Rohit in the ODI team, as he considered ViratKohlis the best ODI batter and Rohit Sharma the best ODI opener. Along with their individual batting, their experience is also invaluable for the betterment of the team.
"I feel extremely lucky. Virat bhai is probably the best ODI batter, and Rohit bhai is the best ODI opener in the world. To be able to have these two players in the team, along with their experience and the moments that they have shared, is great. We really enjoy having them in the team, and their experience is very valuable for us," Shubman Gill told the reporters.
Shubman Gill mentions his way of captaincy
Gill further stated that not only Virat and Rohit, he often goes to KL Rahul and Shreyas Iyer as well to collect some opinions. The skipper tried to make a compilation of the opinions from his fellows before taking the final call.
"Often, not just those two (Rohit and Virat); I go to even KL or Shreyas, for that matter. I like to take everyone's opinion, but at the end of the day, if I feel, 'Okay, this is something I missed and did not consider,' then I take their opinion into account," Gill added.
"But most of the time, if they come to suggest something, I might have already thought about it. If I have not thought about it, then I will consider their thoughts and opinions. You listen to everyone, see what they are thinking, and then decide what would work best in that situation. I think learning comes from that."
