Shubman Gill is set to become India’s next Test skipper after Rohit Sharma departed from the red-ball format. England all-rounder Moeen Ali reckons Gill’s inexperience in the Test matches.
Gill has to fill the boots of players like Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma when he takes over India’s test captaincy. His debut Test series as skipper will be in England in June 2025, and this will be a big challenge for him in red-ball format.
Moeen Ali suggests Jasprit Bumrah over Shubman Gill in Test captaincy
The English all-rounder wants BCCI to pick Jasprit Bumrah to lead India in the England tour. Bumrah also had an experience in the Test captaincy as he led the Indian side in Australia in the absence of Rohit Sharma.
“I think it will be Shubman Gill. Ideally, the BCCI would want Jasprit Bumrah to captain because he is a very good captain, a good leader who has done it before. But because of his injury record, he might not be able to last the whole series,” Moeen Ali told Sky Sports.
Bumrah’s workload management is the reason that BCCI is looking for a young player to lead the side, and Gill has been proving himself in the IPL by leading the Gujarat Titans.
Shubman Gill’s record against England in Test cricket
Shubman Gill will be touring England for the second time. The young batter got three opportunities in his last England tour. With being as a frontrunner to be the Test skipper, Gill will be looking to make an impact with the bat this time.
Gill’s numbers are not great in England, as he scored just 88 runs in six innings at an average of just 14.66. His highest score on England soil is just 28 runs.
Gill also averages only 35 in Test cricket, and in the away Tests, his average drops down to 29. He never scored a Test century outside Asia in his Test career.
Will Shubman Gill bat at No. 4?
Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli’s retirement opens a different position for Gill to bat in Test cricket. Gill started his Test career as an opener, but after the WTC final 2023, he got the opportunity to bat at No. 3 in place of Cheteshwar Pujara.
Gill will look to fill the boots of great Kohli at the no. 4 position, and he has options to cement his position in Test cricket. At the No. 4 position, Gill can fill Kohli’s legacy in Test cricket.
Gill has scored 1656 runs at the No. 3 position with three hundreds in Test cricket. If he wants to bat at no. 4, then it will also be the first time he will bat in the middle order.
