Former India batter Ajay Jadeja has slammed Gujarat Titans (GT) skipper Shubman Gill for calling Rajasthan Royals (RR) opener Vaibhav Suryavanshi’s knock a “lucky day.” The former Indian cricketer described Gill as “some player on television” while praising the 14-year-old batter for his maiden century in the IPL.

Suryavanshi scored 101 runs off 38 balls, including eight boundaries and 11 towering sixes, at the Sawai Mansingh Stadium in Jaipur on Monday, April 29. He became the youngest player ever to score a century in the tournament’s history. RR secured an emphatic eight-wicket win after five consecutive losses.

“It was his (lucky) day. His hitting was just tremendous, and he made full use of his day,” said Shubman Gill while speaking to the host broadcaster.

Chasing a 210-run target, Suryavanshi (35 balls) smashed the fastest century by an Indian in IPL history. His knock ended in the 12th over when Prasidh Krishna cleaned him up. Before his dismissal, Suryavanshi had added a 166-run stand with Yashasvi Jaiswal. RR completed the chase in 15.5 overs.

Some Player on Television Just Said, It Was Just His Lucky Day - Ajay Jadeja

Ajay Jadeja expressed his displeasure with Shubman Gill’s comment about Vaibhav Suryavanshi’s performance. Jadeja said that Gill dismissing his knock as just a "lucky day" didn’t take away from the young batter’s achievement.

“But a 14-year-old to believe in himself, the amount that he believes in himself, and to take it that far, even if it's, you know, one day like some player on television just said, oh, it was just his lucky day,” said Jadeja while speaking to JioStar.

Vaibhav Suryavanshi Will Be Analyzed a Hundred Times - Ajay Jadeja

Ajay Jadeja said that Vaibhav Suryavanshi turned that dream into reality. He mentioned the power in Suryavanshi’s performance, adding that he will likely be analyzed repeatedly in the future.

"All of us who played cricket dreamt of cricket in a certain way, either in our drawing rooms or when we were playing with our friends. This is what you dream of. At 14 and 15, all of us must have dreamt of different things. But this is what you actually dream about. This man has gone out there and lived that dream. There's power. He'll be analysed a hundred times," said Ajay Jadeja.

The left-hander displayed confidence and aggression during the match. He took on experienced India bowlers like Ishant Sharma, Mohammed Siraj, and Prasidh Krishna right from the start.

The southpaw scored 28 runs off Ishant Sharma in the fourth over. He also smashed 30 runs off Karim Janat. The opener won the Player of the Match for his knock. He will next be seen in action when the Royals take on the Mumbai Indians (MI) in Jaipur on Thursday, May 1.
