In a huge setback for India, Shubman Gill is reportedly ruled out of the upcoming three-match ODI series against South Africa due to the neck injury he sustained during the first Test. According to reports, the right-handed batter’s participation in the five-match T20I series against the Proteas is also uncertain.
Shubman Gill walked off after just three balls in the first innings at Eden Gardens in Kolkata. The young batter suffered a neck spasm after playing a sweep shot. The medical staff took him to a private hospital, and he did not come out to bat again. India failed to chase the 124-run target and suffered a 30-run defeat.
He was released from the hospital after the match. The BCCI confirmed that he would undergo further evaluation in Mumbai to assess the extent of the issue. Gill travelled with the squad to Guwahati but wasn’t included in the playing XI.

According to a report by the Times of India, Shubman Gill has been advised to extend his recovery period on the recommendation of Dr. Dinshaw Pardiwala. His condition will be assessed again next week to determine how he is progressing.
A BCCI official confirmed that Gill will not feature in the upcoming three-match ODI series against South Africa. Medical specialists have recommended additional rest, and the board’s medical team will continue to monitor him closely.
"Unfortunately Gill will not be available for selection for the three ODIs vs South Africa. He has been advised more rest by the specialists and continues to be monitored by the BCCI medical team," said a BCCI official.
Shubman Gill’s Neck Issue Has Not Shown Improvement
As per an internal mail accessed by Sports Tak, Shubman Gill’s neck issue has not shown improvement. He recently received an injection, but doctors have advised him to rest before he can begin rehabilitation, conditioning, or skill-based training.
Spine specialist Dr Abhay Nene examined Gill in Mumbai and confirmed that the batter will not recover in time for the upcoming ODI series. Gill is unavailable for the South Africa ODIs while he continues his recovery under medical supervision.
"Dear Mr Agarkar, Shubman had a consultation with Dr Abhay Nene, Spine Specialist in Mumbai, yesterday. He has had an injection to alleviate his symptoms and will need a period of rest before we commence rehab, training and skill activity. Therefore, he is ruled out of the forthcoming ODI series against South Africa," the mail read, as quoted by Sports Tak.
Shubman Gill Doubtful for T20I Series Against South Africa
Shubman Gill may also miss the T20I series against South Africa. The opener will miss the ODI series, forcing the selectors to look for a temporary captain. KL Rahul is currently the frontrunner to lead, with Rishabh Pant also under consideration.
The BCCI will announce India’s squads for both formats on November 23 after a selection meeting in Mumbai. The ODI series is scheduled for November 30, December 3, and December 6, followed by five T20Is on December 9, 11, 14, 17, and 19.
Gill was appointed ODI captain for the season. Vice-captain Shreyas Iyer is also recovering after an injury sustained in the final ODI against Australia and is expected to miss the entire home series.
