The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) selection committee is set to finalize India’s T20I squad for the upcoming Asia Cup 2025 in the UAE on Tuesday, August 18. There have been talks on the future of Shubman Gill, with some backing his selection while others do not want to disturb the line-up.

Shubman Gill scored 754 runs at an average of 75 with four centuries during the England tour. Following his stellar performance, he was expected to be included in the Asia Cup. There were speculations that he might even take on India’s T20 captaincy, especially with concerns over Suryakumar Yadav’s fitness.

Shubman Gill Unlikely to Feature in Asia Cup 2025

According to the Times of India, Shubman Gill’s spot for the Asia Cup is uncertain. The selectors are not fully convinced about his readiness for the T20 format.

"Gill is a terrific batsman, all the selectors and head coach Gautam Gambhir are huge fans of his batting, and he is rated almost as highly as Virat Kohli in India’s cricket circles in terms of potential. However, he doesn’t fit into the T20 scheme of things right now" a BCCI source told TOI.

"Presently, the idea is to persist with ‘keeper-bat Sanju Samson and Abhishek Sharma as openers, with Tilak Varma coming in at No. 3 and skipper Suryakumar at No. 4. If you see, Abhishek and Varma are rated as the No. 1 and No. 2 batters in T20Is in the ICC rankings currently. How can you drop them?"

Shubman Gill in Fine Form but Asia Cup Spot Not Guaranteed

Shubman Gill's form in the short format is not a concern. He scored 650 runs in 15 matches at an average of 50.00 and a strike rate of 155.88, including 6 half-centuries during IPL 2025. The Gujarat Titans (GT) captain might still not have done enough to guarantee himself a T20I spot.

Openers Abhishek Sharma and Sanju Samson have been in exceptional form. Samson smashed three centuries for India last year, while Abhishek recently reached the No. 1 ICC T20I batter ranking. Sharma scored 135 off 54 balls against England earlier this year.

Meanwhile, Tilak Varma has cemented his place at No. 3 with back-to-back centuries against South Africa. With India’s top order firing, Gill has to wait for a chance.

India to Kick Off Asia Cup 2025 Against UAE on September 10

India will begin their Asia Cup 2025 campaign on September 10 against the UAE. The much-anticipated match against Pakistan will take place at the same venue on September 14. The tournament will conclude with the final in Dubai on September 28.

Shreyas Iyer’s place in the squad is uncertain despite being in good form. The middle-order batter led Punjab Kings (PBKS) to the IPL 2025 final. Iyer was India’s leading run-getter during their Champions Trophy win earlier this year, scoring 243 runs across five matches.

Jasprit Bumrah has confirmed his availability for the Asia Cup. The pace spearhead may miss the start of India’s home Test series against the West Indies, beginning on October 2. Meanwhile, Mohammed Siraj might not be included in the Asia Cup squad.
