Indian Test skipper Shubman Gill is all set to take over as the next ODI captain, replacing Rohit Sharma, since his availability post the Australia tour continues to be under major doubt.

Shubman Gill took over the Test captaincy from Rohit Sharma and led India to a drawn series against England. Following Shubman Gill's stunning performance in the England series, the BCCI had made its intention clear to not consider anyone else for Indian captaincy.

On the other hand, a huge speculation has been building over the end of ODI careers for Indian legends Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli. With an eye on the 2027 ODI World Cup, the BCCI is keen to groom their next skipper before the major tournament.

Shubman Gill to take over Rohit Sharma as ODI captain after Australia series

As has been the centre of discussions in Indian cricket, Shubman Gill has been named the Test skipper and is soon to take over the captaincy role in the white-ball formats as well.

With increasing concerns over Rohit Sharma's long-term future in the ODI team, since he has already retired from the other two formats, the Hitman cannot be cited to continue as the skipper till the next World Cup.

As per the latest reports in RevSportz, there has been no question that Shubman Gill will be appointed as the next Indian skipper for ODIs; it's only a matter of time before the official announcement is made.

Gill is also likely to take over India's T20I captaincy from Suryakumar Yadav, a call that is obvious but might be after the 2026 T20 World Cup. The traditional "one captain for all formats" philosophy has worked well for Indian cricket in the past.

Rohit Sharma's exit finalized ahead of India A Squad selection

By the time of the next World Cup in 2027, Rohit Sharma will be 40 years old, and being active with only one format, it is going to be a very tough job for him to maintain his spot within the Indian side.

Though undoubtedly Rohit is a veteran of the 50-over format, having amassed a large number of runs, the limited number of ODI assignments for India raises questions over Rohit and Virat Kohli, who too has left the other two formats.

As per the RevSportz report, though Rohit has shown an urge towards playing in the ODI format and featuring in the upcoming World Cup, the decision is not entirely in the hands of the cricketer since the BCCI would also have a role. A tricky situation awaits both Rohit and the BCCI in the coming weeks.

Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma to be picked for India A in ODIs

As per reports in the Hindustan Times, Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli are likely to be picked for the India A Squad for the Australia A series.

The series, which will see Shreyas Iyer leading the Indian team multi-day format, will also mark three one-day games.

These games would act as a preparatory phase for the two Indian legends since they have been absent from international cricket action over a course of more than 6 months. Kohli and Rohit are currently focused on taking up fitness Tests ahead of the series.
