The 80th Independence Day became a special occasion for the India National Cricket Team as the entire squad came together in Galle to celebrate the day of the nation's liberation from British rule before the crucial two-match Test series opener against Sri Lanka on Saturday, August 15.
India National Cricket Team gathered at the Galle International Cricket Stadium for the flag-hoisting ceremony ahead of the first Test against Sri Lanka. The day was even more special for the young skipper as Captain Shubman Gill had the privilege of unfurling the Indian Tricolor.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) shared a video of the celebration on its social media handles. In the video, the Indian players and support staff were seen wearing their training kits and standing together to celebrate the 80th Independence Day in Galle.
Indian head coach Gautam Gambhir and captain Shubman Gill took part in the flag-hoisting formalities. After the Tricolour was unfurled by Gill, the entire Indian contingent stood together for the national anthem. The players proudly joined the celebrations and marked India’s Independence Day while representing the country in Sri Lanka in the game of cricket.
The occasion of the 80th Independence Day holds even greater importance for Shubman Gill because he is set to lead India in a historic 600th Test match. With the landmark Test coming on Independence Day, the celebrations in Galle became a perfect start to a huge moment in Indian cricket.

The Independence Day celebration must have given the Indian players a strong and emotional start as they aim to whitewash Sri Lanka in the two-match Test series to come inch closer to their dream to play in the ICC World Test Championship (WTC) final in 2027.
Shubman Gill embraces special captaincy honour
Even Shubman Gill said that leading India in the 600th Test is a huge honour for him, and that too on Independence Day makes the moment even more special and memorable for him. Amid this, an ex-RCB pacer backs Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Mohammed Shami for India selection.
Gill said at the pre-match press conference: “It’s a very big honour and a privilege. Any Test match that you captain for your country is a huge deal. Obviously, leading my country in our 600th Test match is a big honour and privilege for me, and doing that on Independence Day is even more special for us.”
India ready to create history with landmark 600th Test against Sri Lanka
Meanwhile, India will become only the third team in the world to play 600 or more Tests when they will take the field to face Sri Lanka in the first Test in Galle on Saturday. England are at the top with 1,097 Tests, followed by Australia with 883. India will now join them in this special list.
India played their first-ever Test match in June 1932 against England at Lord’s. It was a tough start for India as they lost the match by 158 runs. The team had to wait for 25 Tests and around 20 years to get its first Test win.
Their wait ended in 1952 when India defeated England by an innings and six runs in Madras on February 10 under the captaincy of the legendary Vijay Hazare. From that first Test in 1932 to the historic 600th Test, India’s journey has been long and full of memorable moments.
