Gujarat Titans (GT) skipper Shubman Gill opened up about the heated interaction he had with the umpires during the match against Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) in the IPL 2025. The opener said that such exchanges can occur because of the high emotions involved when players give their all on the field.
The Gujarat Titans defeated Sunrisers Hyderabad by 38 runs in the 51st match of IPL 2025 at the iconic Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on Friday, May 2. GT moved to second place in the points table with 14 points from 10 matches. Meanwhile, Hyderabad suffered their seventh loss in 10 games.
Shubman Gill Loses Cool During Heated Exchange With Umpires
Shubman Gill grabbed the center of attention due to two animated exchanges with the on-field and fourth umpires. The first confrontation occurred during the 14th over. Gill had a heated exchange with Kannur Swaroopanand and Virender Sharma over a DRS review that went against the Titans.
Abhishek Sharma was hit on the right toe while attempting a flick shot. The Titans opted for a review, which they lost when the ball-tracking showed an umpire's call. Gill had another heated discussion with the fourth umpire after being run out, with the visuals of the incident not providing a clear view.
Gill scored 76 runs from just 38 balls, including 10 boundaries and 2 sixes, before being run out. It was his third consecutive half-century and fifth in the last seven innings. Gill has scored 465 runs from 10 matches, with an impressive average of 51.66 and an equally impressive strike rate of 162.02.
There Are So Many Emotions Involved - Shubman Gill
Shubman Gill said that emotions can run high during such moments. He stated that when players give their all on the field, it's natural to have discussions like the one he had with the umpire.
“There was a little bit of a discussion with me and the umpire, sometimes there are so many emotions involved as you give your 110 per cent, there are bound to be some emotions," Gill said while speaking at the post-match presentation.
The Idea Was to Continue to Play Like We Have - Shubman Gill
Shubman Gill credited Gujarat’s top-order success this season to their ability to adapt to challenging pitches. Gill said that their strategy wasn’t about avoiding dot balls but focused on giving their best. Gujarat ended with just 22 dot balls in 20 overs.
“Didn’t plan that (22 dot balls), the idea was to continue to play like we have. Black soil (pitches), we’ve seen it’s not easy to hit sixes. But the way our top order plays, we know how to keep the scoreboard ticking," Gill said.
“We’ve never had the conversation for one of the top-three to always be there at the end. We’re just eager to do our best," he added.
Gujarat Titans posted a formidable total of 224/6 in their 20 overs. Shubman Gill and Sai Sudharsan added 87 runs off just 41 balls. Jos Buttler smashed 64 off 37 deliveries. Gujarat will next face Mumbai Indians (MI) on May 6 in an away fixture.
