Shubman Gill will be looking to hit the ground running when he leads Team India in the upcoming five-match T20I series against Zimbabwe.

The youngster will have a point to prove after failing to make the cut for the recently-concluded ICC T20 World Cup 2024. He was a notable absentee from the India squad although he was named as one of the traveling reserves. Shubman Gill was released by the Indian team after the end of their US leg in the tournament.

He as well as Avesh Khan were released by the team and were allowed to return home. Avesh Khan returned home from New York but Shubman Gill decided to extend his stay in the USA. And on Tuesday (July 2), he landed in Harare from New York to begin his preparations for the series. Earlier on Monday, the Indian team departed for Zimbabwe as well.

Watch as Shubman Gill lands in Harare:

Shubman Gill has been named the captain of the Indian team for the series as the senior players have been rested for the assignment after the T20 World Cup. Three players from the T20 World Cup squad were named in the series but they have been replaced as well after the Indian team failed to leave Barbados on Monday due to Hurricane Beryl.

Yashasvi Jaiswal, Sanju Samson, and Shivam Dube were named in the squad for the Zimbabwe series. However, they have now been replaced by Sai Sudharsan, Jitesh Sharma, and Harshit Rana for the first two games of the five-match series.

The series against Zimbabwe will be India's first assignment in T20Is since they were crowned world champions. The Men in Blue beat South Africa by 7 runs to win the T20 World Cup after a long gap of 17 years. The five-match series is scheduled to be played from July 6 to 14. All the games will be played in Harare.
