India’s newly appointed ODI captain, Shubman Gill, has given a contrasting statement to the chief selector, Ajit Agarkar, on the chances of both Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma playing in the ICC World Cup 2027.
Earlier, Agarkar said that there is no guarantee of the iconic batters featuring in India’s squad for the ICC World Cup 2027. But Shubman Gill has made it clear that both Rohit and Virat remain in the mix for selection in the mega event in South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Namibia.

Gill has emphasized that very few players bring such skills and proven records to the team, so he would love to have the former captain at his side for the ICC World Cup 2027.
Shubman Gill said at the pre-match press conference, “The experience that they have and the matches they have won for India are really valuable. Very few players provide this skill and experience. They are definitely in the mix. We need them.”
Shubman Gill aims to foster unity and friendship like Rohit Sharma
Additionally, India’s new ODI captain is looking to bring calmness and team unity to the squad, inspired by Rohit Sharma. Gill wants to foster the strong friendships and positive atmosphere in the team just like Rohit, as he is set for another big tour of Australia as captain.
The young captain noted, “The calmness of Rohit Bhai and the friendships that he created among the group, I want to imbibe that.”
Sai Sudharsan under pressure as Ryan ten Doeschate highlights fierce competition
Meanwhile, India’s Test batting lineup is heating up with fierce competition as Sai Sudharsan struggles to cement his place. Sai managed just seven runs in the first Test, while Dhruv Jurel stole the show with a brilliant century in India’s dominant win over the West Indies.
Ahead of the second test, the assistant coach Ryan ten Doeschate emphasized the intense competition within the team. He noted that Sudharsan is fully aware of the challenge ahead, with multiple talented players, including Jurel, vying for limited top-order spots.
He also pointed out how quickly opportunities can come and go, citing the example of Karun Nair’s short stint in England. With Shubman Gill taking one top-order spot securely, the remaining positions are fiercely contested, and consistent performances will be the key to staying in the team.

Sai Sudharsan is under no illusion: Ryan ten Doeschate
Ryan ten Doeschate said at the pre-match press conference, “I think he is under no illusion, and he can't hide away from the fact that you do fight for a spot in this environment, where you saw Karun Nair get four Test matches in England (before getting dropped for the West Indies series).
There are a lot of good players fighting up the hill for whoever has possession of that spot. I'd imagine it does put pressure on Sai Sudharsan. I think Dhruv showed last week just what a good player he is... there are other good players fighting for a top-three or top-four spot—obviously Shubman’s got four nailed down.”
