Some chances came our way early, couldn't grab those - Shubman Gill
Batting first in the match, Gujarat Titans posted 209/4 on the board, thanks to Shubman Gill (84) and Jos Buttler (50). Defending the total, they were annihilated by Vaibhav Suryavanshi (101 off 38), and the run-chase was completed in 15.5 overs.
Speaking after the match, GT skipper Shubman Gill said that there were a few things that they could have done better and grabbed some chances that came early on in the innings. Shubman Gill said:
"They took the game away from us in the powerplay and credit to them for that. There were a couple of things that we could have done better but it's very easy to sit out and say those things. Some chances came early our way, couldn't grab those but in hindsight I think there are some areas that we need to work on as a group."
Felt a little back spasm in my back - Shubman Gill
Shubman Gill further revealed why he was subbed out ahead of the start of the second innings. He dropped a worrying update, saying that he had a back spasm and didn't want to risk himself by being on the field. He said:
"(On sitting out in the second innings) Felt a little back spasm in my back and we have a game couple of days after this, so the physio didn't want to take a chance."
Shubman Gill also lavished high praise on Vaibhav Suryavanshi for his sensational ton. He elaborated:
"What happened in the previous match - win or lose - we take one game as it is. The next match is at Ahmedabad, we have had a good run there, so hopefully we'll be able to continue that. (On Vaibhav Suryavanshi) It was his day. His hitting was just tremendous and he made full use of his day.
How did GT perform in the previous IPL match against RR?
GT delivered a brilliant all-round performance to beat RR by 58 runs on April 9, 2025, in Ahmedabad. Being invited to bat first, GT posted a mammoth total of 217/6 on the back of Sai Sudharsan’s brilliant 82 off 53 balls and then defended it pretty well.
Despite losing Shubman Gill early, GT kept the run rate in check, with Sai Sudharsan and Jos Buttler batting brilliantly. The youngster slammed an incredible fifty while Jos Buttler came up with 36 runs off 25 balls, and Shahrukh Khan smashed 36 off 20 balls.
In the end, Rahul Tewatia and Rashid Khan provided late fireworks, scoring 24 and 12 runs, respectively, to push the total beyond the 200-run mark.
Defending 218, GT bowlers came out all guns blazing. Mohammed Siraj and Arshad Khan set the tone in the powerplay by dismissing two top-order batters cheaply.
Prasidh Krishna then delivered a match-defining spell, picking up three crucial wickets, including that of Sanju Samson and Shimron Hetmyer. Also, Rashid Khan and Sai Kishore provided excellent support, sharing four wickets between them and bundling out RR for 159 in 19.2 overs.
