Shubman Gill is going to be a very, very good player: Joe Root

Joe Root said on the 'Stick to Cricket' podcast, "I think Kane (Williamson) is a wonderful player. I think Steve Smith's been incredible, especially when he's played against us. Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma—I mean the same… Shubman Gill. I think he is going to be a very, very good player.”

Notably, Gill is currently playing in the Asia Cup 2025, where he is India’s vice-captain. The right-handed batter was recalled to the side after his impressive England tour, where he amassed over 700 runs to help India level the five-match Test series.

In his short career, Gill has already scored over 2500 runs in both Test and ODI cricket, while he could manage around 600 runs in 22 T20Is for India.

Joe Root compares Harry Brook to Kevin Pietersen

Meanwhile, Root also showered rich praise on his England teammate Harry Brook. The former England captain said that Brook “makes his life so much easier,” and he even compared the youngster’s presence on the crease to that of legendary Kevin Pietersen.

The Englishman said, “Harry Brook, he makes my life so much easier with the amount of pressure he just puts on bowlers. When KP was at the crease, his aura, his presence, was quite intimidating, whereas with Harry, it is more about how he can hit you anywhere at any time.”

Brook is establishing himself as one of England’s most feared and dependable batters across all formats with over 4,600 runs in 109 international matches at an impressive average above 43 and a strike rate nearing 98. Brook had already smashed 11 centuries and 23 fifties, with the career-best score of 317 to his name.

His impact in Test cricket has been impressive since making his debut in 2022. He has amassed over 2,800 runs at an astonishing average above 57 and a strike rate of 87 in the format. Brook has already recorded 10 centuries and 13 fifties. And now, he is England’s white-ball captain.
