New Zealand all-rounder Glenn Phillips shared a lighthearted exchange with India batter Shubman Gill during the ICC Champions Trophy 2025. Phillips recalled that Gill questioned him about having an issue with players using the MRF bat ahead of the IPL 2025 clash between Gujarat Titans and Punjab Kings.

Shubman Gill, who had just switched to using an MRF bat before the final, asked Glenn Phillips if he had a problem with MRF bats. Phillips called Gill humble with a great sense of humor. He added that it was great to share the same team rather than always watching Gill scoring runs against him.

"The thing he said to me was, what's your problem with MRF bats? It seems like anyone with a MRF bat seems to hit it straight to you and you won't drop them," said Phillips.

"So yeah, he's got a great sense of humour. We had a good yarn at the team dinner the other night. It's great to know him personally and to be in his team and rather see him score runs against us all the time. He is a really down-to-earth guy, really enjoyable to be around," he added.

Phillips praised Shubman Gill for his leadership qualities. He said that Gill is humble and treats everyone equally. Phillips added that Gill is always open to conversations, which makes him an excellent leader.

"He's got a big profile and personality from an entertainment perspective. But how he is as a person is completely opposite. He's incredibly welcoming, his door is always open for a chat for everyone. He treats everyone equally and has all the hallmarks of a great leader," said Phillips.

Glenn Phillips backed Shubman Gill to guide Gujarat Titans to the IPL playoffs for the first time. Phillips emphasized that Gujarat had an outstanding first two seasons and hoped for a strong comeback in 2025.

"The way they played in the first two years of the team's adventuring was fantastic, and they were in form, and it was awesome, and hopefully, we're in form this year. I don't think it has anything to do with the way Shubman or the pressure that's under him. You know, he plays for India. Like you don't get much more pressure than that," he added.

Gujarat Titans will kick off their IPL 2025 campaign against Punjab Kings on March 25 in Ahmedabad. The franchise enjoyed success in their debut season, winning the IPL title in 2022 under Hardik Pandya. They also finished as runners-up in 2023.

However, Shubman Gill took over as captain for the 2024 season, with GT managing only five wins in 12 matches and finishing eighth on the points table.
