Former Indian cricketer-turned commentator, Aakash Chopra, has thrown his weight of support behind the young opener, Shubman Gill, stating that the team management’s decision to persistent with him for the WTC final was the right one.
Gill, who had a breakout debut series in Australia, has struggled in his last 5 Test matches.
He looked good in both innings in the WTC final but failed to convert his starts into a big knock.
A fan asked Aakash Chopra during a video on his YouTube channel as to whether KL Rahul should replace Gill at the opening slot in the upcoming five-match Test series against England.
Chopra responded by saying that the opening combination of Rohit Sharma and Gill was the best choice for the WTC final and the duo should continue to open in the Test series against England.
“Shubman Gill should have definitely played. I feel he should definitely be play the first Test against England as well. Gill and Rohit Sharma was the right combination,” said Aakash Chopra.
“It did not work out; if we look back the path always looks better on the rear-view mirror but whoever has to select the team has to look ahead and not behind,” Aakash Chopra said.
“Gill with Rohit Sharma was the right decision. Shubman Gill with Rohit Sharma will be the right decision for the first Test match also. I am going with what the team did.” he said.
KL Rahul hasn’t played a Test match since he was dropped from the set-up after the 2019 series in the Caribbean and Aakash Chopra was quick to point that even if the team management decided to drop Gill, they would have replaced him with Mayank Agarwal, who is ahead in the
”You couldn’t have played him [Rahul]. Before KL Rahul, they should have played Mayank Agarwal. And now when you go ahead also, Mayank is ahead of KL Rahul in the pecking order.” he said.
Having said that, the upcoming Test series will be extremely crucial for young Gill and he will be desperate to once again stamp his authority on the game as he did in Australia last winter.
