Shubman Gill said that captaining Team India is a “great honour” following the seven-wicket victory in the second and final Test against the West Indies. The young cricketer stated that he is adapting to the role by managing players and making decisions, including bold calls, based on the match situation.
The right-handed batter was dismissed for 13 runs while trying to play an aggressive shot during the chase on Day 5 at Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi. Roston Chase removed Gill in the 33rd over of India's second innings. The home team needed just 13 runs to complete a clean-sweep series when Gill was dismissed.
It's A Big Honour To Lead India - Shubman Gill
Speaking after the match, Shubman Gill opened up about his experience of leading the Test team for the first time on home soil. Gill stated that he is getting used to leading the team in this format.
"It's a big honour (to lead India). It's a really big honour, I'm kind of getting used to it. Managing all the players, leading this team is a great honour," Gill said.
"It's about taking the right options in the given situation. I try to make the most probable decision in the given situation that we are in that game. And sometimes you have to take a bold decision, depending on which player can get you certain runs or can get you those wickets," he added.
It Could Be A Tough Day For Us - Shubman Gill
Shubman Gill said that they decided not to enforce the follow-on, as taking six or seven wickets on Day 5 could have been challenging. He also stated that the team focused on grooming players capable of performing in overseas conditions to strengthen India’s chances abroad.
"(On enforcing the follow-on) We were around 300 runs ahead. We thought even if we scored like 500 runs and we have to get 6 or 7 wickets on day 5, it could be a tough day for us. So, that was the thought process," Gill stated.
"(On playing Nitish Reddy) He didn't really get to bowl in this match. We don't want players to only play matches overseas. That puts a lot of pressure on the players. We want to groom certain players that we think can help us win matches overseas because that's been a challenge for us."
Shubman Gill Secures His First Home Test Series as Captain
Gill secured his first home Test series as captain. He guided India to a seven-wicket victory in the second Test against the West Indies, completing a 2-0 series sweep.
Gill was presented with the series-winning trophy by BCCI vice-president Rajiv Shukla. He passed it to N Jagadeesan as the team celebrated and posed for official photos. The Indian management and coaching staff joined the squad, with the trophy placed in front of the winners’ placard.
The star batter scored an unbeaten century in the first innings that was crucial in securing the victory. Notably, it was his highest Test score at home. Gill will next play for India in the ODI series against Australia, where he will lead the side for the first time as captain.
He said, "(On the Australia series) It's a long flight, maybe we can plan on the flight."
