Shubman Gill surpasses Rohit Sharma to become India’s No.1 in WTC history, equals ‘captain’ Virat Kohli’s record

India National Cricket Team captain Shubman Gill has notched up another stylish hundred and entered the record books on Saturday, October 11. Shubman Gill played his natural game and reached the three figures with a stylish shot off Khary Pierre for 3 runs in the ongoing second and final Test against the West Indies in Delhi.

With this knock, Gill has entered the record books by becoming the first Indian to score 10 centuries in the ICC World Test Championship (WTC). While doing so, the stylish right-handed batter has surpassed the former India captain Rohit Sharma, who had 9 hundreds in 69 innings.

Shubman Gill makes history with stylish century in Delhi Test

Gill achieved this milestone in just his 71st innings. The 2025 calendar year has been exceptional for the Punjab lad as Test captain, as it was his fifth hundred in only 12 innings. With this, Gill becomes the third fastest player to hit five Test hundreds as the captain.

England legend Alastair Cook (9 innings) and legendary Indian batter Sunil Gavaskar (10 innings) reached the five hundreds in fewer innings than Gill. However, Virat Kohli also scored five hundreds in a year as the Indian captain in both 2017 and 2018, but it took him 16 and 24 innings, respectively.

Additionally, Gill now leads the all-time list of most hundreds for India in WTC history, with 10 centuries. Other stars featured in the list are Rohit (9), Yashasvi Jaiswal (7), Rishabh Pant (6), and KL Rahul (6).

Shubman Gill sets new home Test record as West Indies' struggles continue

Meanwhile, the Indian captain has once again impressed one and all by scoring an unbeaten 129 against the West Indies in the ongoing Delhi Test. This is now Gill’s highest individual score in home tests, surpassing his previous best of 128 against Australia in Ahmedabad in 2023.

The India-West Indies Test encounters have been dominated by Indian batters in recent years. Since 2013, there have been 25 centuries scored in the last 14 Tests between the two teams, with 23 of them coming from Indian batters. Roston Chase is the only West Indies player to reach three figures against India in Tests since 2023, and amazingly, he has done it twice.

India declared first innings at 518/5 against West Indies in Delhi Test

On the other hand, India has produced dominant batting performance to declare at 518/5 after winning the toss in the ongoing Test against the West Indies. Yashasvi Jaiswal was the top scorer with a brilliant 175, but his innings was cut short due to an unfortunate run-out, denying him a well-deserved double century. Gill came out all guns blazing and scored his 10th Test century.

Sai Sudharsan narrowly missed his maiden Test hundred by just 13 runs on Day 1, while Nitish Kumar Reddy and Dhruv Jurel batted at a brisk pace on Day 2, helping India cross the 500-run mark comfortably against the West Indies at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in New Delhi.

The West Indies bowlers tried hard but struggled to control the Indian batting onslaught. The left-arm spinner Akeal Warrican was the standout bowler for the touring side, picking up three crucial wickets and giving his team some hope. Captain Chase managed one wicket against India.
