Team India top-order batter Shubman Gill silenced his critics with a century during the second innings of the first Test against Bangladesh in Chennai. Gill also broke his teammate Virat Kohli's century record and moved to second place in the elite list led by skipper Rohit Sharma.

Gill was dismissed for a duck in the first innings at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai. The right-handed batter was out due to an unfortunate strangle down the leg side. However, he made a comeback in the second innings to reach the milestone on Saturday, September 21.

The 25-year-old cricketer reached his century during the third innings by taking a single off Mehidy Hasan Miraz's bowling. The batter took 160 balls to reach the milestone with the help of nine fours and three sixes. Notably, it was his fifth Test century and his second one against Bangladesh.

India found themselves in trouble at 67/3 in the second innings. Rishabh Pant and Shubman Gill formed a 167-run partnership for the fourth wicket. Pant scored 109 runs, while Gill remained unbeaten on 119. India ultimately declared their innings at 287/4, setting Bangladesh a target of 515 runs.

Shubman Gill Smashes His Fifth Test Century

Shubman Gill's century was also his fifth in the World Test Championship (WTC). After his innings, Gill surpassed the century tally of Virat Kohli, Rishabh Pant, and Mayank Agarwal, who each have four centuries in the WTC. Rohit Sharma leads the list of most centuries by Indian batters in the WTC.

Rohit Sharma has smashed nine centuries across 33 WTC matches so far. He is likely to hold this record for an extended period, considering the difference between the first and second on the list.
