Former England captain Michael Vaughan suggested that Shubman Gill could be the next iconic figure in Indian cricket. Vaughan hinted at the prospect of Gill following in the footsteps of legendary players like Sachin Tendulkar and Virat Kohli in Indian cricket.

Shubman Gill is often referred to as the next big thing in Indian cricket as he has played several memorable knocks during his brief career. The right-handed batter recently dethroned Pakistan captain Babar Azam to reach the top spot in the ICC ODI rankings.

Michael Vaughan took to X (formerly known as Twitter) to laud Shubman Gill for his brilliant knock in the semi-final against New Zealand. Vaughan noted that the baton was passed from Sachin Tendulkar to Virat Kohli and is now being handed over to Gill.

Shubman Gill scored 79 runs off 65 deliveries at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai on Wednesday, November 15. He seemed to be in control throughout his knock, smashing 8 fours and 3 sixes. However, he walked off the crease as he retired hurt due to cramps.

Shubman Gill earlier reacted to the comparisons with legendary players like Sachin Tendulkar, Virat Kohli, and Rohit Sharma. He emphasized that the impact of these players goes beyond specific victories, highlighting the timeless and immortal nature of their legacies.

“The generation that all of these people – Sachin sir (Tendulkar) sir, Virat (Kohli) bhai, Rohit Sharma – have inspired is beyond. Had we not won the ’83 World Cup, had there been a Sachin Tendulkar? No. Had we not won the 2011 World Cup, would I be as inspired? Maybe, maybe not. These kinds of legacies are immortal, you can’t really define them,” Gill said.

The 24-year-old missed the first two matches of the World Cup due to dengue. The opening batter has scored 349 runs in 8 innings at a moderate average of 43.62 and an impressive strike rate of 108.05. He has smashed four half-centuries with a best score of 92 runs.
