Indian skipper Rohit Sharma might miss the third and final ODI of the ongoing series against Sri Lanka at the R. Premadasa Stadium in Colombo on Wednesday, August 7. Vice-captain Shubman Gill is likely to lead the India national cricket team if Rohit Sharma misses the upcoming match against Sri Lanka.

The Men in Blue have struggled against the Sri Lankan spinners in the first two matches of the ongoing series.

The visiting team collapsed in the middle overs against the spin bowlers. The first ODI match ended in a tie, and the home team secured the victory in the next match to gain an unassailable lead of 1-0.

The Indian batters, except for Rohit Sharma, struggled against the Sri Lankan spinners in the recent match. Legspinner Jeffery Vandersay took an impressive five-wicket haul, taking six wickets for 33 runs in 10 overs. India lost the match by 32 runs, and they needed to win the final match to level the series.

Shubman Gill had underwhelming performances in the first two matches of the series. He has scored just 51 runs in two innings. He was out cheaply in the first ODI and added 35 in the second match.

Shubman Gill missed an opportunity to convert it into a big score. He will be aiming to end the 50-over series on a high note.

Feels Like Shubman Gill Will Captain - Sports Journalist Rohit Juglan

Sports journalist Rohit Juglan from Revsportz Hindi said that Shubman Gill might captain the Indian team in the upcoming match. Rohit Juglan took to social media X (formerly known as Twitter) to share the news.

"Pata nahin kyon aisa lag raha hai kal Shubhman Gill kaptani karenge baaki details ke liye (I don't know why, but it feels like Shubhman Gill will captain tomorrow. For more details...) - Youtube - Rohit Juglan"

Rohit Sharma Has Been Brilliant Form With Bat In ODI Series

According to several media reports, Rohit Sharma did not attend training on Tuesday after complaining of discomfort in his right thigh. He reportedly did not participate in any batting, bowling, or fielding drills. The Indian skipper sustained a thigh injury during the second ODI match against Sri Lanka.

The Indian cricket team will face a major setback if the 37-year-old batter misses the match due to injury. The selection did not pick a backup opener for the three-ODI series. Rohit's absence could impact the team's playing combination as the management will need to choose another player as an opener and Shubman Gill might captain.

The veteran opening batter has been in outstanding form in the ODI series. The right-handed batter has scored two half-centuries. He has amassed 122 runs at an impressive average of 61.00 and an outstanding strike rate of 134.07. He is the highest run scorer for India in the three-match ODI series.

The visitors aim to level the series, while the hosts will try to secure a win and achieve their first series victory over India in 27 years. It will be interesting to see how Shubman Gill leads.
