Team India captain Shubman Gill has continued his impressive batting performances during the second innings of the fourth Test against England at Old Trafford in Manchester. The right-handed batter reached his fourth century of the series on the final day (Sunday, July 27) of the ongoing Test match.

After India suffered a disastrous start with both Yashasvi Jaiswal and Sai Sudharsan dismissed for ducks in the very first over on the fourth day, Shubman Gill and KL Rahul came together to steady the innings. The duo added a 188-run stand for the third wicket that kept India’s hopes of a draw alive.

They frustrated the English bowlers for a large part of the day. KL Rahul looked set for a century, but England captain Ben Stokes provided the breakthrough for his side. Rahul’s resistance ended at 90 runs from 230 deliveries. However, Gill went on to complete his fourth hundred of the ongoing series.

Shubman Gill Reaches Fourth Century in Maiden Test Series as Captain

Shubman Gill reached the milestone on the last ball of the 83rd over in India’s second innings. The right-handed batter completed his ninth century in Tests. Gill guided a full delivery outside off through point for a single to bring up the landmark.

The crowd rose to their feet as Gill removed his helmet and raised his bat in acknowledgment. The Indian skipper has been showcasing exceptional form since taking over the leadership.

However, Gill knows the job isn’t done. With India still under pressure, he must continue to anchor the innings and ensure there are no further collapses.

Shubman Gill Equals Don Bradman with a Gutsy Century in Manchester

Shubman Gill rose to the occasion when India needed him the most. He not only steadied the innings under immense pressure but also led from the front with a fighting century. His knock helped India reduce a huge deficit and stretch the contest into the final day of the Test.

Gill, who was unbeaten on 78 overnight, resumed on the fifth morning with the same determination and fluency. With this century, he joined an elite group of batters, such as Don Bradman, Sunil Gavaskar, and Virat Kohli, who have scored four or more centuries in a single Test series.

The ton came at a crucial moment, especially after criticism over his leadership following the defeat at Lord’s and the bowling strategy in Manchester’s first innings. This knock served as a powerful response, reaffirming his credentials as both a top-order batter and India's Test captain.
