Former India National Cricket Team player Robin Uthappa has lashed out at the captaincy of the Gujarat Titans (GT) skipper Shubman Gill in the Eliminator of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025.
Robin Uthappa slammed Shubman Gill's usage of the star right-arm pacer Prasidh Krishna in the powerplay against the Mumbai Indians (MI) in IPL 2025 Eliminator.
Prasidh Krishna - the top wicket-taker in IPL 2025
Star pacer Prasidh Krishna has been in top-notch form in the ongoing season of the Indian Premier League. Playing for the Gujarat Titans, he has displayed his best-ever performance in the league.
He has significantly improved his game under the Gujarat Titans' head coach, Ashish Nehra, and showcased his true potential by delivering game-changing performances for the franchise.
However, he was not able to put up a good bowling performance against the Mumbai Indians in the must-win clash at the Maharaja Yadavindra Singh International Cricket Stadium, New Chandigarh.
Contrary to the league stage games, Prasidh Krishna was brought in to bowl by Shubman Gill inside the powerplay, and the move heavily backfired.
While bowling the second over of the innings, Krishna produced an opportunity to dismiss Rohit Sharma, but Gerald Coetzee dropped the catch, and he ended up giving 12 runs. Then, he bowled the fourth over in which he was decimated and conceded 26 runs.
After that, Krishna directly bowled the 17th and 19th over, giving away 13 and 8 runs while also picking up two wickets.
Overall, he registered the bowling figures of 4-0-53-2 and gave away runs at an economy of 13.25. Notably, Prasidh Krishna's two wickets in the match pushed him to the top of the purple cap list with 25 wickets in 15 matches.
GT’s strategy was more reactive than proactive - Rohin Uthappa
Speaking after the match, Robin Uthappa slammed Shubman Gill's captaincy and questioned his decision to bring Prasidh Krishna in the powerplay.
"GT’s strategy was more reactive than proactive. Using Prasidh in the powerplay – despite his success in middle overs – was a misstep. His first over was expensive, and they failed to course-correct,” Uthappa said on JioStar
"The 26-run and 22-run overs proved costly. On top of that, their fielding let them down. You can't drop that many catches and expect to win a championship,” he added.
His composure stood out - Robin Uthappa hails Rohit Sharma
Robin Uthappa also hailed Rohit Sharma's match-winning knock of 81 runs off 50 balls, with 9 fours and 4 sixes, which came after two lifelines.
Uthappa said that the Mumbai Indians superstar showcased great composure and put pressure on the opposition.
“After the early drop, Rohit flirted with danger briefly but quickly recognized the need to take control. He shifted gears, played responsibly, found the gaps, and built key partnerships. His composure stood out.”
“When players like Rohit, Dhoni, or Kohli are at the crease, the pressure is on everyone else. Sai Sudharsan is starting to reach that level too,” Robin Uthappa added.
