Former Australian captain Greg Chappell urged India to end their obsession with Jasprit Bumrah ahead of the fourth Test against England. Chappell stated that victories are built on collective performance, not just individual brilliance, and added that India have succeeded in Tests without Bumrah in the past.

India are preparing for the fourth Test against England at Old Trafford in Manchester, starting on Wednesday, July 23. The Shubman Gill-led team is trailing 1-2 in the ongoing five-match series after a defeat at Lord’s. A loss in the upcoming match would hand the series to England with one Test still remaining.

Jasprit Bumrah in Fine Form With the Ball Despite Missing the Second Test

Jasprit Bumrah’s availability remains a major talking point ahead of the fourth Test. He has been one of the best performers for India in the series. The pacer has taken 12 wickets in four innings, including two five-wicket hauls. He is likely to play only three matches due to workload management.

Bumrah played in the first Test at Headingley and returned for the third at Lord’s after being rested for the second at Edgbaston. He earned a place on the honours board, but India lost the match at Lord’s and now trail the series 2-1.

Assistant coach Ryan ten Doeschate has hinted that Bumrah is likely to play in Manchester, and his inclusion remains crucial to India’s hopes of staying in the series.

India Have Won Plenty of Tests Without Jasprit Bumrah - Greg Chappell

In his ESPNcricinfo column, Greg Chappell stated that the obsession with Jasprit Bumrah’s availability is not needed. He added that teamwork is needed more than individual brilliance for success.

“And a word on Bumrah: the obsession with whether he plays or doesn't is missing the point. India have won plenty of Tests without him recently," Chappell wrote.

"The key is not individual brilliance, it's collective performance. Teams win when everyone does their job. When the captain makes sure each player is clear, confident, and committed to the plan. That's the formula,” he added.

If Gill Wants to Become a Great Test Captain, This Is His Moment - Greg Chappell

Greg Chappell said that the upcoming Manchester Test is an opportunity for Shubman Gill to prove his leadership. He urged Gill to lead not only with the bat but also by setting high standards, backing his team selections, and holding players accountable.

"If Gill wants to become a great Test captain, this is his moment to stamp his authority. Not just with the bat, but with his leadership. Set the standard. Demand it of others. Pick your team. Back them."

"Make sure every man knows what is expected and hold them to it. Because in the end, cricket isn't about heroes. It's about partnerships. It's about teams. And it's about captains who bring the best out of those around them," added Chappell.
