Shubman Gill's replacement announced after sickness

Indian Test skipper Shubman Gill is likely to miss the upcoming Duleep Trophy despite being appointed as the skipper of the North Zone.

Gill is slowly earning a reputation for himself in Indian cricket, especially with his recent rise in the Gambhir era, where he has been identified as the next Indian all-format skipper.

The batter took over the Test captaincy post Rohit Sharma's retirement and made a commanding rise with the bat, amassing 754 runs across 5 matches in the series against England in the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy.

Shubman Gill to miss Duleep Trophy

After his terrific show in England, Shubman Gill was considered for a T20I comeback and featured as India's vice-captain in the Asia Cup, with the hope that he can later be switched to a captaincy role across white-ball formats as well.

However, alongside white-ball cricket, he was also named the skipper of the North Zone side for the Duleep Trophy season, which would mark the beginning of the Indian domestic season on 28th August.

Shubman is likely to miss the Duleep Trophy starting in Bengaluru, as the North Zone selection committee has been anticipating his possible unavailability for the zonal competition. Until Friday, they had received no communication from the North Zone associations.

Gill is likely to be rested before the Asia Cup because of sickness, since Cricbuzz has reported that he has been tested by the physios and has submitted a health report to the BCCI.

North Zone had announced Gill's replacement for the Duleep Trophy beforehand

Shubman Gill would not have featured throughout the entire strength of the Duleep Trophy anyway, since he would have to leave for international commitments with the Indian team for the Asia Cup. The Asia Cup begins on the 9th of September, and India has scheduled their first practice session on the 5th of September.

This proves he could feature in only the opening game of the Duleep Trophy season; however, they had already named Shubham Rohilla as the replacement of Shubman Gill in the North Zone side. Haryana player and vice-captain, Ankit Kumar, might be seen taking up the role of North Zone's captain.

The North Zone selection committee also named replacements for other players leaving midway for International duty

The North Zone committee had also announced the likes of Arshdeep Singh and Harshit Rana's replacements beforehand, since these players would also be leaving for the Asia Cup 2025.

The North Zone selection committee consists of Chetan Sharma (Haryana), Nikhil Chopra (Delhi), Amit Uniyal (Chandigarh), Mithun Minhas (J&K and convenor), Raj Kumar (Services) and Mukesh Kumar (Himachal Pradesh).

They have named Gurnoor Brar and Anuj Thakral as the replacements for the two Indian bowlers who would play for India in the Asia Cup alongside Shubman Gill.
