However, Smriti came into the final game after a commanding hundred at Mullanpur and continued her good form. Beth Mooney also joined the elite list of Women cricketers with the third-fastest ODI century
Before the RCB batter set the unique record for the second-fastest century in World cricket and the fastest ever by an Indian batter, Australian wicket-keeper batter Beth Mooney, who has also shown remarkable consistency in the series, got off to a ravishing hundred.
The Aussie left-hander's innings was also marked with immense valor and grit and was a saga of fearless hitting. She toyed with the Indian bowlers as she reached a hundred off just 57 balls.
This was the second-fastest hundred by an Australian cricketer in WODIs, as she joined former legend Karen Rolton in the list of fastest Women's centurions. Mooney is also the third fastest to an ODI hundred, a record feat that came for two cricketers in the same game.
Despite Smriti Mandhana's terrific innings, India Women falter in mammoth chase
The Aussie women batting first had almost set an ungettable target for the Indian women in the final ODI before the onset of the Women's ICC ODI World Cup, which is scheduled to start on the 30th of September.
With comprehensive half-centuries from Georgia Voll and Ellyse Perry and a splendid start by the skipper, the stage was all set for the middle order to capitalise, and so did Mooney. With a terrific hundred, she took Australia to a score of 412.
Though Smriti Mandhana and skipper Harmanpreet Kaur put up a breathtaking partnership for the Women in Blue after the two early dismissals, Australians were right back in the game when Kim Garth returned to the attack and dismissed the Indian skipper.
After Smriti Mandhana's wicket fell, the Indian team was soon 5 wickets down in no time. Richa Ghosh's wicket was a further big blow, as Deepti Sharma, alongside Radha Yadav, is looking to stitch a partnership to help India through. However, after the dismissal of the two set batters, it looks like a distant job.
