Smriti Mandhana will have a chance to create history when India begin their three-match T20I series against Zimbabwe on Thursday, October 16. The Indian opener needs just 133 runs to become the first batter to reach 5,000 runs in women’s T20I cricket.

The series also marks a new leadership phase for India after Harmanpreet Kaur stepped down as captain across formats. Following their gold medal win at the 2026 Asian Games in Aichi-Nagoya, India will look to maintain their strong white-ball form while assessing new batting combinations against Zimbabwe.

Smriti Mandhana Eyes Historic 5,000-Run T20I Milestone

Since making her international debut in 2013, Smriti Mandhana has established herself as one of India’s most consistent batters in the shortest format. She has scored 4,867 runs in 179 T20I matches at an average of 31 and a strike rate of 127.47, including two centuries and 37 half-centuries.

With three matches scheduled in Raipur, Mandhana has an opportunity to reach the landmark during the series. Her ability to provide quick starts and build substantial innings will be important as India look to put pressure on Zimbabwe’s bowling attack.

The left-hander’s consistency at the top of the order could also help India establish control early in the innings. Her performances will be closely watched as she approaches a milestone that would make her the first batter to reach 5,000 runs in women’s T20Is.

Smriti Mandhana Begins Full-Time Captaincy Stint After Harmanpreet Kaur Steps Down

The Zimbabwe series marks the beginning of Smriti Mandhana’s tenure as India’s full-time captain across formats. She takes over from Harmanpreet Kaur, who stepped down earlier this month after leading India to a gold medal at the 2026 Asian Games in Aichi-Nagoya.

Mandhana brings considerable leadership experience to the role. She has led Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) to two Women’s Premier League titles and served as India’s vice-captain for nearly a decade. She has also captained India in 18 T20Is on an interim basis, winning 11 matches, and won all four ODIs in which she led the national team.

Harmanpreet will continue to be part of the dressing room, providing experience during the transition. Smriti Mandhana has suggested that stepping away from captaincy duties could allow the veteran batter to focus on her batting and rediscover the aggressive form associated with her “Harmonster” persona.

India vs Zimbabwe: Series Schedule, No. 3 Vacancy And Team News

The tour marks the first bilateral women’s cricket series between India and Zimbabwe. The teams will play three T20Is in Raipur on October 16, 18 and 20 before moving to Vadodara for three ODIs on October 23, 25 and 28.

India also face a selection challenge following an injury to middle-order batter Jemimah Rodrigues. Her absence leaves a vacancy at No. 3, with Mandhana identifying Anushka Sharma, Niki Prasad and G Kamalini as potential candidates for the position.

Zimbabwe, captained by Josephine Nkomo, will arrive with confidence after retaining the squad that recently secured their first-ever ICC Women’s Championship victory against the West Indies. The visitors will look to build on that achievement and test themselves against India, the reigning ODI World Cup champions.
