Former India National Cricket Team skipper Sourav Ganguly backed Virat Kohli to come out good in the upcoming Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25. He said that the batter would want to make this series count and this could also be his last tour to Australia.
The Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25 is around the corner and all the attention has turned towards Virat Kohli. The premier batter will be holding the key for the India National Cricket Team in the entire series, and it's fair to say if he brings his best, India will have a massive chance.
Virat Kohli has been under the pump because of his poor performances of late
Kohli has been under the pump because of his poor performances of late. The batter struggled to get going in the entire home Test season as he failed in both the Test series against Bangladesh as well as New Zealand. Since the last few years, his average too has dropped, and he has managed just a few tons since 2020.
But with the kind of player he is, one cannot write off Virat Kohli. The premier batter has proved his worth time and time again and if he sets the stage on fire this time, it will be no surprise. He has enjoyed his time in Australia and would want to add to his tally.
Kohli has mustered 2000 runs from 25 Tests at an average of 47.48. He also has scored 8 centuries vs Australia, out of which 6 have come away from home, which indicates how much he enjoys playing against them, and his stats down under will be a massive boost for the India National Cricket Team.
But his numbers in 2024 have been a matter of concern, and it is because of that he is under the pump. He has been averaging 22.72 in six matches so far this year. It also saw him slipping out of the top-20 list in the ICC Test rankings for the first time in 10 years.
He will want to make this series count, and he will also know this could be the last time he is touring Australia - Sourav Ganguly on Virat Kohli
Sourav Ganguly, while hailing Virat Kohli as a champion batter, highlighted how the batter has managed to find success in Australia. He believes that it could last series for batter in Australia and he would want to make it count. Speaking to RevSportz, he explained:
"He is a champion batter. And he has had success in Australia in the past. He scored four hundreds in 2014, scored a hundred in 2018 as well. He will want to make this series count, and he will also know this could be the last time he is touring Australia to play Test cricket."
So, in every sense, this is a massive series for Kohli - Sourav Ganguly
Sourav Ganguly admitted that it will be a massive series for Virat Kohli. He mentioned that pitches weren't good for batting in the New Zealand series, claiming that the batter will enjoy playing in Australia. He elaborated:
"So, in every sense, this is a massive series for Kohli. I don’t want to read too much into the New Zealand series. The pitches did not allow good batting. In Australia, he will enjoy the conditions. There will be good pitches. I am backing Virat to deliver in Australia in this series."
