Former Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) president Sourav Ganguly has condemned the rape-murder case of a trainee doctor at Kolkata's RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. Sourav Ganguly also demanded severe punishment for the guilty so that no one dared to commit such a crime again.

India has been shocked by the tragic rape and murder of a female doctor at Kolkata's RG Kar Medical College and Hospital on August 9. The heinous crime has sparked widespread protests on the roads across the country. Both the public and celebrities are demanding strict action against the accused.

A civic volunteer was arrested for his alleged role in the crime. Following public outrage and protests, the Calcutta High Court ordered the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to take over the case. The Central Bureau of Investigation has since started its investigation into the matter after the court's order.

Don't Know How It Was Interpreted - Sourav Ganguly

Sourav Ganguly has strongly condemned the rape and murder of a female doctor in Kolkata and demanded severe punishment for the guilty. The former India captain clarified his earlier statement, which had upset social media users. He expressed hope that the CBI will ensure justice is served.

“I told that last Sunday, I don’t know how it was construed or was interpreted. I have said it earlier also, it’s a terrible thing. Now CBI, police are investigating the matter. Its very shameful what has happened,” Sourav Ganguly was quoted as saying by PTI.

"I hope that CBI, who are investigating the matter, once they find the culprit strict punishment should be given. The punishment should be such that no one dares to commit such crime again in their life. That is important. Punishment has to be severe," he added.

In response to the tragic murder of a trainee doctor, the Indian Medical Association (IMA) has called for a nationwide strike. The Health Ministry has urged doctors to resume work and promised to establish a committee to ensure their safety. However, all emergency services will continue uninterrupted.

Bengali Actress Slams Sourav Ganguly For His Statement

Earlier, Bengali actress Sreelekha Mitra criticized Sourav Ganguly for referring to the Kolkata rape as a "stray incident." Mitra, who protested against the crime, expressed disappointment in Ganguly's statement.

"It can happen anywhere. We have a good security system and India is a fantastic country. We live in great city and great state. You can’t be judged by one incident, but strict action should be taken. There should be proper security in hospitals, on grounds and in the streets,” Ganguly had said.

“People have loved you as a cricketer. They admired your TV shows. You are called Maharaja. I am sad that you called it a stray incident. It is time for people like this to be dragged down,” Sreelekha Mitra said.
