South Africa Playing XI vs Pakistan- 1st ODI, South Africa Tour of Pakistan 2025
Openers: Matthew Breetzke (c), Quinton de Kock (wk)
The Proteas have named an inexperienced but talented squad for the three-match ODI series against Pakistan and would bank on it to come good in all three formats of the game.
South Africa would look to build on the number of consistent performances that they have delivered in the ODI format of the game in the last couple of years, which include reaching the semi-final of the 2023 ODI World Cup.
The visitors won't have the services of many senior players like ODI captain Temba Bavuma and T20I captain Aiden Markram, and will be led by Matthew Breetzke, who made his debut earlier this year.
Breetzke is expected to open the innings for South Africa along with experienced wicketkeeper batter Quinton de Kock, who is making a comeback in ODI cricket, having done so in T20I as well last month.
The pair would hope to provide a platform for other batters to capitalize on by getting the team off to a good start in the first power play, along with scoring runs individually as well.
Middle-order batsmen and all-rounders: Tony de Zorzi, Lhuan-dre Pretorius, Dewald Brevis, George Linde, Corbin Bosch
Although Africa is expected to have batting till number seven with Corbin Bosch coming in at that particular position, the inexperience in the South African batting lineup is quite visible.
To cover that up, the team would bank on the top five batters to bat sensibly by spending time at the wicket and getting used to the conditions, thereby dictating terms in the middle overs.
The likes of Tony de Zorzi, Lhuan-dre Pretorius, and Dewald Brevis would be entrusted to do that job as they can change gears as and when needed.
It would be interesting to see how the African batters adapt to the change in format, as they were also a part of the recently concluded T20I series.
Bowlers: Nandre Burger, Bjorn Fortuin, Lizaad Williams, Lungi Ngidi
African bowlers would back themselves to put on a spirited effort with the ball against a Pakistani batting lineup that has a good blend of youth and experience.
The African bowling attack is relatively inexperienced in comparison to that of their opposition.
Having said that, they can take confidence from the fact that they were able to bowl Pakistan out for 139 in the first T20I and come up with a similar performance.
The onus will be on the new ball bowlers to provide early breakthroughs to the visitors and make things easy for the spinners in the middle phase of the innings.
Nandre Burger and Lungi Ngidi are expected to open the bowling for Africa from either end and will be supported by Lizaad Williams, with Corbin Bosch being the fast bowling all-rounder.
The spin bowling department of Africa will be handled by George Linde and Bjorn Fortuin, with the responsibility of picking wickets in the middle overs.
