Cricket South Africa (CSA) on Tuesday, April 30, announced their 15-player squad for the upcoming ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2024, which is scheduled to take place in the USA and West Indies.

Aiden Markram will lead the South Africa National Cricket Team for the first time in an ICC event, as he was named captain of their 15-member T20 World Cup 2024 squad on Tuesday.

Among the surprising inclusions in South Africa’s T20 World Cup 2024 squad are Anrich Nortje and Quinton de Kock, as they were recently left out of Cricket South Africa's (CSA) central contract list.

Two uncapped players named in South Africa's T20 World Cup 2024 squad

Nortje has not played any international cricket since September 2023 due to a back injury, while De Kock retired from ODIs after the 2023 Cricket World Cup and Test cricket in 2022. Despite having already cleared his intentions to play franchise cricket across the world, De Kock was given one last chance to lift the ICC trophy by handing him the T20 World Cup ticket.

On the other hand, Ryan Rickelton and Ottniel Baartman are the only two uncapped players in South Africa’s T20 World Cup squad. They earned their spots in the squad on the back of their outstanding performances in the SA20 2024 earlier this year.

Rickelton was the top run scorer in the tournament, with 530 runs at an impressive average of 58.88 and a strike rate of 173.77 for MI Cape Town. Meanwhile, Baartman showcased his bowling prowess by claiming 18 wickets in 8 matches for defending champion Sunrisers Eastern Cape in the SA20.

Apart from these young bloods, the Proteas boast a formidable batting lineup comprising the skipper, Aiden Markram, wicketkeeper-batter Quinton de Kock, batter Reeza Hendricks, wicketkeeper-batter Heinrich Klaasen, hard-hitter David Miller, and the promising talent, Tristan Stubbs.

South Africa’s pace attack looks really strong for T20 World Cup 2024

South Africa’s pace attack will be spearheaded by Kagiso Rabada and Anrich Nortje in the upcoming multi-nation event, and they will have the support of talented fast bowlers Marco Jansen and Gerald Coetzee. On the other hand, South Africa’s spin attack featured Bjorn Fortuin, Keshav Maharaj, and Tabraiz Shamsi for the upcoming T20 World Cup 2024.

The national selectors also named the 28-year-old left-arm pacer Nandre Burger and the death-over specialist Lungi Ngidi in their team as the traveling reserves for the upcoming showpiece event. The Protease became the second team after New Zealand to announce their T20 World Cup squad.

South Africa’s T20 World Cup 2024 squad is a perfect blend of youth and experience, and it looks quite strong, which can give them a chance to win the cup in the USA and West Indies. South Africa will begin their T20 World Cup 2024 campaign against Sri Lanka on June 3 in New York.
