Cricket South Africa (CSA) on Friday (June 6) announced the 16-member squad for the two-match Test series against Zimbabwe. The South Africa National Cricket Team is currently gearing up for the ICC World Test Championship Final 2025 against Australia at Lord’s.
After the WTC Final 2025, the South African team travels to Zimbabwe for the two-match Test series, starting on June 28 at the Queen’s Sports Club Cricket Ground in Bulawayo. The second and final Test will be played from July 6 at the same venue in Bulawayo.
South Africa named Test squad for Zimbabwe tour
Well, CSA has given rest to six players from their WTC Final 2025 squad, including Aiden Markram, Ryan Rickelton, Tristan Stubbs, Marco Jansen, and Kagiso Rabada. There are high chances that Dane Paterson might retire after the WTC Final at Lord’s, so he didn’t make the cut to the squad.
CSA has named an exciting squad for their upcoming Zimbabwe tour featuring five uncapped players. The 19-year-old batting sensation, Lhuan-dre Pretorius, has been rewarded for his impressive performances and is in line to make his debut in the Zimbabwe tour.

Apart from Pretorius, Dewald Brevis, Lesego Senokwane, Codi Yusuf, and Prenelan Subrayen are also in line to earn their maiden Test caps as South Africa looks to build a fresh core for the future. Notably, Lhuan-dre Pretorius has played only six first-class matches so far, but he impressed everyone by scoring three centuries in his first five games.
Shukri Conrad impressed by Dewald Brevis' progress
Dewald Brevis, who was part of Proteas Test squad for the Bangladesh tour last year but didn’t get a chance to make his debut, has yet again been offered the opportunity to make his Test debut. He was the second-highest run-scorer in the recent first-class season, scoring 573 runs in 12 innings with the help of two centuries and two fifties that earned him a Test call-up.
Proteas head coach Shukri Conrad said in a statement, “Dewald deserves a lot of credit for how he has progressed over the past 12 months. He's shown real growth and maturity in the longer format, and it's encouraging to see him evolving into a more complete cricketer.”
Gerald Coetzee, Nandre Burger, and Lizaad Williams to miss Zimbabwe tour
Meanwhile, South Africa will be without Gerald Coetzee, Nandre Burger, and Lizaad Williams for the upcoming Test series in Zimbabwe, as all three fast bowlers recover from injuries. According to Conrad, Coetzee is managing a groin issue, Burger is coming back from a back problem, and Williams is in the final stage of rehab after knee surgery.
Burger has been cleared to play T20Is and will slowly return to red-ball cricket. Coetzee’s recovery plan is focused on helping him stay fit for Test cricket in the future. Now, Kwena Maphaka will join Lungi Ngidi to lead the pace attack on the Zimbabwe tour. There was no mention of Anrich Nortje.
South Africa Test squad for Zimbabwe series:
Temba Bavuma, David Bedingham, Matthew Breetzke, Dewald Brevis, Corbin Bosch, Tony de Zorzi, Zubayr Hamza, Keshav Maharaj, Kwena Maphaka, Wiaan Mulder, Lungi Ngidi, Lhuan-dre Pretorius, Lesego Senokwane, Prenelan Subrayen, Kyle Verreynne, and Codi Yusuf.
