Former English cricketer Graeme Swann opened up about Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) batter Harry Brook’s struggle in the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023. He said that the right-hander is low on confidence and after that hundred it seemed that he eased the pressure but it ramped up on him.

English batter Harry Brook hasn’t got his feet going in the IPL 2023. With the kind of show he exhibited ahead of the league on the international stage, it was expected that he would set the stage on fire. He was acquired by the SRH for a whopping amount of INR 13.25 crores.

However, the IPL 2023 hasn’t been kind to him as he has failed drastically. Harry Brook struggled initially as spinners made time horrible for him in the middle. But he replied to all the critics as he smashed a century against KKR and it was expected that he would not look back and will keep on scoring runs.

But even after scoring a hundred, he looked clueless as he failed drastically before he was dropped from the team for a clash against Rajasthan Royals. In the 9 games so far he has scored just 163 runs at an average of 20.38 with the best of 100 coming against KKR. Not only this, but Harry Brook also has registered two ducks as well.

Graeme Swann feels that Harry Brook has it all in his head and if he doesn’t fire, someone else will replace him as IPL is all about this. Speaking to News 18 in an exclusive interview, he elaborated:

“I think with Harry, it is all in his head. It’s a confidence thing. Every critic knows how hard it is when suddenly you get out of form. He got a brilliant hundred, which seemed to ease the pressure, but rather than ease the pressure it ramped up on him because then he was expected to keep doing it.

“That is, I’m not going to say a drawback, but that is one of the pitfalls of being an international superstar. As a young bloke, when he plays in the England team, he’s still a youngster within a lot of experienced players and still fairly free to go out.

“And if it doesn’t happen for him, someone else will pick up the reins. In the IPL, the overseas players are massive. They’re the match winners. They’ve got all the money spent on them. So if they’re not picking up the … Like scoring 100 or are averaging 60 or whatever, doing what Faf du Plessis is doing, for instance, very quickly the team falls by the wayside. So it’s hard. It’s taking the jump from being a junior to a senior player without doing the middle bit that most people do as they grow up.”

Graeme Swann further backed Harry Brook to return to form and hoped for him to return to XI before the end of the IPL. Adding further, he said:

“So Harry’s brilliant and he will be confident as soon as he comes back. I’ve seen him for 12, 18 months in an England shirt doing things that I haven’t seen any batsman from England even dare to think of doing.

And trust me, the hundred you saw is a glimpse of how good he is. I hope he gets back in the team before the end of this IPL, and I think he should. And I hope he finds some form because if Harry’s going well, then Sunrisers will win.”

Glenn Phillips was drafted in the side in place of Harry Brook and the Kiwi batter in just the span of 7 balls earned his place in the team as he played a blistering cameo to take his team home. It’s fair to say that it’ll be difficult for Harry Brook to return to the XI. SRH will be next seen in action when they will take on Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) next on Saturday (13th May).
