Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) captain Faf du Plessis has been fined heavily after the 16th match in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024. Faf du Plessis breached the IPL's Code of Conduct relating to over-rate offenses during the match against the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR).

The Bengaluru-based franchise suffered a heartbreaking one-run loss in their recent match at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata on Sunday, April 21. The home team successfully defended a 223-run target as the Faf du Plessis-led team was bundled out for 221 runs in the last over of the match.

The RCB team suffered their sixth consecutive loss in the ongoing marquee tournament. The team is almost out of the playoff race with just one win out of eight matches. They are currently at the bottom of the table with just two points to their tally and a net run rate (NRR) of -1.046.

Faf du Plessis Fined For Slow Overrate

Faf du Plessis was fined Rs 12 lakh for maintaining a slow overrate during the match against KKR, and it was RCB's first overrate offense of the season.

“Faf du Plessis, Captain, Royal Challengers Bengaluru has been fined after his team maintained a slow over-rate during Match 36 of the TATA Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 against Kolkata Knight Riders at the Eden Gardens, Kolkata on April 21, 2024,” stated an IPL release.

“As it was his team’s first offence of the season under the IPL’s Code of Conduct relating to minimum over-rate offences, Faf du Plessis was fined INR 12 Lac,” it added.

Bengaluru needed 21 runs, with Mitchell Starc bowling the final over. Karn Sharma provided hope by smashing three sixes off the first four balls. However, Karn was dismissed on the fifth ball, leaving three runs needed off the last ball. Lockie Ferguson managed only one run before being run out.

Sam Curran Fined 50 Percent Of His Match Fees

Punjab Kings' captain, Sam Curran, has been significantly fined for breaching the IPL Code of Conduct. Curran committed a Level 1 offense under Article 2.8, resulting in a fine of 50 percent of his match fees. He admitted to the offense, as stated in an official release by the IPL.

“Sam Curran, the Punjab Kings captain, has been fined 50 percent of his match fees for breaching the IPL Code of Conduct during his team’s Tata Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 match against the Gujarat Titans at the PCA New International Cricket Stadium, Mullanpur on April 21,” the IPL release.

“Curran committed a Level 1 offense under Article 2.8 of the IPL’s Code of Conduct. He admitted to the offense and accepted the Match Referee’s sanction. For Level 1 breaches of the Code of Conduct, the Match Referee’s decision is final and binding,” it added.

Sam Curran led the Punjab Kings (PBKS) in the last two matches in the absence of Shikhar Dhawan. The team suffered their fourth consecutive loss against the Gujarat Titans (GT) in the IPL 2024. The Punjab Kings failed to defend a low total of 142 runs at the Mullanpur Stadium on Sunday.
