Tom Moody’s contract as Sri Lanka Cricket’s director of cricket has been terminated 19 months into a three-year agreement.

The board termed the decision as “amicable,” and SLC is said to be open to the notion of bringing Moody, who has previously coached the Sri Lanka men’s team, back as a consultant in the future. “We are terminating the contract, but as a consultant, if we require his assistance, we will seek it,” SLC CEO Ashley de Silva told ESPNcricinfo.

The technical advisory committee of the board, which made the nomination, was disbanded earlier this year, based on an SLC media release. When that happened, Namal Rajapaksa, the then-sports minister, resigned from his position as a result of a shift in the central administration. The appointment of the committee was significantly influenced by Rajapaksa.

“The Executive Committee of the SLC, after much deliberation, thought that Tom Moody’s services are no longer required as he was directly reporting to the Technical Advisory Committee, which has ceased to exist now,” the SLC statement said.

Tom Moody’s experience with Sri Lanka Cricket:

To properly prepare the team, SLC recruited Moody as the director of cricket in February of last year. Moody had previously served as Sri Lanka’s head coach.

As of the right moment, Moody has not commented on quitting his role. It was previously known that the 1999 World Cup champion would join the Desert Vipers franchise in the UAE’s International League T20 and serve as director of cricket.

The Sri Lankan team’s loss of Tom Moody is undoubtedly a major setback as they get ready for the ICC T20 World Cup 2022 qualifiers and hope to advance to the Super 12 stage. Along with the Netherlands, Namibia, and the UAE, Sri Lanka is in Group A.

The 56-year-old was in charge when the Lankans won the Asia Cup a few days earlier in the United Arab Emirates, defeating Pakistan’s favourite team by 23 runs. As Sri Lanka tries to restore their lost dominance, it is presently unknown who would follow Tom Moody as the director of cricket moving ahead.

However, Moody has taken over as director of cricket for Desert Vipers, one of the six teams in the UAE’s ILT20 league. Moody was recently fired from his position as head coach of IPL team Sunrisers Hyderabad as well, and the franchise chose Brian Lara instead.
