Sri Lanka squad for ICC Women's World Cup 2025 announced; Chamari Athapaththu to lead

Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) have announced their squad for the upcoming ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup 2025, which is set to begin on September 30. The selectors have opted for a mix of experience and proven performers in the squad, with veteran all-rounder Chamari Athapaththu named as captain.
The ICC Women’s World Cup 2025 will begin on September 30. Co-hosts Sri Lanka will face India in the tournament opener in Guwahati. Eight teams will compete for the prestigious championship title. Australia will enter as the defending champions, having defeated England in the 2022 edition final clash.
Sri Lanka Name 15-Member Squad for ICC Women’s World Cup 2025
On Wednesday, September 10, Sri Lanka Cricket announced its 15-member squad for the 2025 World Cup. Chamari Athapaththu will lead the team during the tournament.
"The Sri Lanka Cricket Selection Panel has selected the following 15-member squad to participate in the ICC Women’s World Cup 2025," the statement read.
Experienced players Harshitha Samarawickrama, Nilakshi De Silva, and Anushka Sanjeewani have been included. The batting line-up also features Hasini Perera, Vishmi Gunaratne, Kavisha Dilhari, Imesha Dulani, Dewmi Vihanga, and Piumi Wathsala.
The bowling attack will be spearheaded by Inoka Ranaweera and Sugandika Kumari, with Udeshika Prabodani and Malki Madara providing support. Achini Kulasooriya is also part of the squad, while Inoshi Fernando has been named as a traveling reserve.

Sri Lanka’s best finish in Women’s ODI World Cups came in 2013, when they secured 5th place. They also managed two 6th-place finishes in 2000 and 2005. The team ended 7th in 2017 and missed out on the 2022 tournament. Sri Lanka will now aim to improve on their past records.
ICC Women’s World Cup 2025 Set To Take Place Across Five Venues
The ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup 2025 will take place across five stadiums. India have four venues, ACA Stadium in Guwahati, Holkar Stadium in Indore, ACA-VDCA Stadium in Visakhapatnam, and DY Patil Stadium in Navi Mumbai, while Sri Lanka have one, R. Premadasa Stadium in Colombo.
The tournament will follow a round-robin format with 28 group matches. Australia will face New Zealand on October 1. India will take on Pakistan on October 5 in Colombo. Most matches will start at 3:00 PM, except for England vs New Zealand on October 26, which will begin at 11:00 AM.
The semi-finals will take place on October 29 and 30. The first semi-final will be played in Guwahati or Colombo, depending on Pakistan’s progress, and the second in Navi Mumbai. The final will be held on November 2 in Colombo if Pakistan qualifies, or in Navi Mumbai if they do not.
