Legendary South Africa National Cricket Team batsman AB de Villiers has passed on a bold verdict on the star India National Cricket Team opening batsman Shubman Gill, saying that he still needs to learn a lot.
Gill has established himself as a three-format player for India in a short period of time. He has scored runs across three formats and has dominated the opponents with his brilliant batting performances.
Shubman Gill was expected to set the stage on fire in the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023 at home and he was backed by many experts to finish the competition as the leading run-getter.
However, he wasn’t able to create the impact that many expected. Gill finished the competition with 354 runs in 9 innings at an average of 44.25 and a strike rate of 106.94, including 4 half-centuries. Notably, he missed the first few matches for the team due to dengue.
I love watching Shubman Gill bat – AB de Villiers
Talking about Shubman Gill, AB de Villiers said that the 24-year-old is a fantastic player, but he still needs to learn a lot to grow in international cricket. The Proteas great, however, feels that the young batsman has got all the weapons in his arsenal to be successful.
“I love watching Shubman Gill bat. He’s an absolutely fantastic player. He’s still got a lot to learn, but he’s showed that he has got all shots in the book, everything that he needs to be successful,” De Villiers was quoted as saying to India Today.
AB de Villiers added that Gill needs to balance things out and then he will score a lot of runs for India.
“It’s a matter of him just balancing it out, making sure that he understands the rhythm of the game, understands his own game really well, and I think he can score a lot of runs for India in the future,” he added.
So far, Shubman Gill has played 18, Tests, 44 ODIs, and 11 T20Is for India National Cricket Team and has scored 966, 2271, and 304 runs respectively. He will be next seen in action on the India tour of South Africa 2023-24.
