New Zealand left-arm spinner Ajaz Patel created history in the recently concluded Mumbai Test against India, as he became only the third bowler in Test history to pick 10 wickets in an innings and received hearty wishes from former India opener Virender Sehwag.

Patel was like a lone wolf bowler for New Zealand in their record 372-run loss in the second Test match at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai. With this loss, New Zealand also lost the two-match series 0-1 after the first encounter in Kanpur ended in a draw.

Ajaz Patel bowled almost 48 overs in Mumbai and picked 10/119 as India was bowled out for 325 despite 150 from Mayank Agarwal and a half-century from Akshar Patel.

New Zealand was then bowled out for 62 runs in their first innings, effectively losing the match there itself, as Ravichandran Ashwin picked 4/8. India then batted again and declared their innings at 276/7d. Mayank Agarwal made 62, while Cheteshwar Pujara and Shubman Gill both made 47 each.

Ajaz Patel was once again in the wickets, picking 4/106 in 26 overs as New Zealand was asked to chase 540 runs. Despite Daryl Mitchell’s 60 and 44 from Henry Nicholls, New Zealand only managed to make 167 in their second innings.

Ashwin once again picked 4/34, while Jayant Yadav also took 4/49, as India recorded their biggest Test win in terms of runs, winning by 372 runs.

Virender Sehwag was all praises for Ajaz Patel and tweeted: “One of the most difficult things to achieve in the game. 10 wickets in an innings. A day to remember for the rest of your life, #AjazPatel. Born in Mumbai, creating history in Mumbai. Congratulations on the historic achievement.”

To this Patel had a very funny reply, while thanking the former India captain: “Thank you @virendersehwag, funny story I still remember you smashing me out of the ground at the outer oval at Eden Park when I came in as a net bowler.”

The incident Patel must be referring to could date back to the 2008/09 series, when India had toured New Zealand and won the Test series 1-0 and the ODIs 3-1, since it was the last tour Sehwag had made of New Zealand.

Virender Sehwag is known for being a wordsmith, replied to Ajaz with some words of encouragement and tweeted: “Waqt ki aadat hai , badalta zaroor hai. What you have achieved in Mumbai is extra-ordinary so much so that India ki jeet se jyada aapke charche hain. May you achieve ever more success and good luck.”
