Sunil Gavaskar, former India captain, has opined that thanks to the tremendous bench strength in the Indian limited-overs squad at the moment, there isn’t a single player on the side that can call himself a certainty in the playing XI.

This comes after the Indian team won limited-overs series against New Zealand and West Indies at home, white-washing both the sides in T20Is and the Kieron Pollard-led side in the three-match ODI series as well. India has won the matches despite giving rest to some of its top players like Virat Kohli, Jasprit Bumrah, Rishabh Pant, Mohammad Shami, and others.

Indian team has also battled injuries to some of their players like Suryakumar Yadav, Akshar Patel, and others.

No Member Of This Team Can Say To Himself That He’s A Certainty: Sunil Gavaskar Calls This An Exciting Time For Indian Team

The Indian team is on a ten-match winning streak ahead of the second T20I against Sri Lanka at Dharamsala on February 26, 2022. They defeated West Indies and New Zealand 3-0 each and won against Sri Lanka in the first match of the series. Before that, they had won three consecutive matches in the T20 World Cup 2021 as well.

In the absence of noted names, newbies like Ravi Bishnoi and Venkatesh Iyer have done the damage, while Ishan Kishan and Shreyas Iyer showed what they are capable of when given a long rope, as they slammed quick-fire fifties in the first T20I against Sri Lanka.

Former India captain Sunil Gavaskar said that it is an exciting time for the Indian team in white-ball cricket.  This is because, he said, every player from the bench shows the hunger to get into the playing XI and youngsters are getting chances to showcase their talent on the international stage.

“These are really exciting times for Indian cricket. I use the word exciting because of the amount of talent that is on the show and the way they’re saying ‘consider me. Take me in the squad’,” Gavaskar told on Star Sports.

Gavaskar further added that the regulars of the side will have to ensure that they keep performing as the members on the bench are ready to get into the field when needed and that is a big positive.

“That means the guys who are settled will not be complacent. No member of this team can say to himself that he’s a certainty because there’s someone at the back chasing. That’s the best thing to have for any team and for India to have that is a huge plus.” he added.

The second and third T20Is between India and Sri Lanka will be played on February 26 and 27 in Dharamsala.
