Former Indian cricketer Sunil Gavaskar praised Rohit Sharma for his brilliant batting during the recent India vs England 2nd Test encounter at Lord’s. Gavaskar also feels that the Indian opener is in great form and will smack a century in the upcoming Test matches of the series.

Rohit Sharma smashed his highest-ever overseas Test score against England at Lord’s. In the first innings, he scored astonishing 83 runs before getting castled by England pacer James Anderson. The right-handed batsman also built a 126-run stand with KL Rahul for the opening wicket.

Sunil Gavaskar Feels A Century By Rohit Sharma Is Just Around The Corner

While speaking to Sony Sports Network, Indian commentator Sunil Gavaskar heaped praises on Rohit Sharma for his intelligent and patient batting in the Lord’s Test.

“In a five-day Test match, no one has an idea as to how the pitch will behave on the first day – things like whether there is life on this pitch, will the ball bounce more? For that, you need some time and the adjustment Rohit Sharma showed in the first innings, how to do it.

“He did it brilliantly – what shots to play and what not. Just see how many balls he left, some of them close to the off stump. This adjustment is mental and that is what Rohit accomplished,” Gavaskar said.

About Rohit Sharma missing his century at Lord’s by just 17 runs, Gavaskar said that getting a century at Lords isn’t everything. He also feels that the Indian opener is on his way to score a century in the upcoming Tests against England.

“And this is what gives us hope from a player. If you get a player who can guarantee score 80 runs, then in a five-Test series, he would end up with 400-450 runs. What else does a captain need? Yes, he would be disappointed not scoring a century, but getting a century at Lords isn’t everything.

“You score a century at Trent Bridge, or Leeds… if you score a century for India in whichever part of the world, that is what is important. And the way he is batting, the time he has and the position in which he gets himself in, it feels as if a century is just around the corner,” Gavaskar further said.

After smacking 83 runs in the 1st innings, Rohit Sharma could only score 21 runs in the 2nd innings. However, with tailenders Jaspirt Bumrah and Mohammed Shami’s 89-run stand for the 9th wicket, India set up a target of 272 for England in the 2nd innings. Bowling out the host for just 120, India managed to clinch victory by 151 runs.

KL Rahul, who shattered a century in the 1st innings, was awarded player of the match. Now with a 1-0 lead in the 5-match Test series, Virat Kohli and co. awaits for the 3rd Test against England, which is set to commence on August 25 at Headinglyin Leeds.
