Indian batting legend Sunil Gavaskar feels that selectors need to make big decisions in the upcoming days if they want Team India to win ICC T20I World Cup 2024. Sunil Gavaskar also highlighted that India not winning the T20I World Cup since 2007 is a huge disappointment.
ICC World Cup 2024 is the next crucial global event. The tournament will be played in June next year in the West Indies and the USA. For India, there is uncertainty over who will lead the team in T20Is after ODI World Cup 2023.
Rohit Sharma is the current skipper of India across all formats. However, he did not play a single T20I game in 2023 and Hardik Pandya led the side. The latter was expected to lead in the shortest format after the World Cup. However, due to his injury, the skipper’s spot remains vacant.
Over Next Few Weeks, Big Decisions Will Have To Be Made: Sunil Gavaskar
In his column for Mid-Day, former India skipper Sunil Gavaskar said that selectors need to make big decisions ahead of the ICC T20 World Cup 2024 if they want the team to win the trophy. The cricketer-turned-commentator also added that the Team needs to accept their mistakes, otherwise, their progress will be affected.
“India will have to accept some of the errors they made in the final if they want to go on and win a trophy. Trying to show solidarity is one thing, but if mistakes are not accepted, then the progress will be slower”.
“Over the next few weeks, big decisions will have to be made by individuals and the selection committee. India not winning the T20 World Cup after 2007 is a huge disappointment considering the exposure its players and youngsters get playing in the IPL,” Sunil Gavaskar said.

Sunil Gavaskar also added that losing the ICC World Cup final is over now and the team needs to move on. He also highlighted that India has shown a wonderful performance in the last few World Cups.
“India not winning the World Cup was disappointing, no doubt, but that is over now, and the game will move on. Over the last four World Cups, the Indian team entered the final twice with one win and got into the semi-finals on the other two occasions. That is a terrific performance when you compare it with the other teams, and only Australia has been better with two trophy wins,” Sunil Gavaskar further wrote.
Meanwhile, Rohit Sharma is yet to respond over the matter of T20I captaincy. Selectors are awaiting his response post which a decision will be taken. India will tour South Africa next month where they will face them in all three formats. Currently, Suryakumar Yadav leads the team in the ongoing T20I series against Australia.
