Rohit Sharma has given a tight slap to those who were writing him off with his stunning performances with the bat. Rohit Sharma might have missed out on a well-deserved century in the third and final ODI against the West Indies, but he won massive praise from Sunil Gavaskar.

After retiring from Test cricket, the former India captain faced plenty of questions about his future, with reports even suggesting that he is not being considered for the ICC ODI World Cup 2027. But Rohit has answered those doubts in the best possible way. Earlier, KL Rahul crowned "most versatile cricketer" by Aakash Chopra.

Sunil Gavaskar disappointed as Rohit Sharma misses century by just 8 runs

Rohit Sharma has scored two centuries and two fifties in his last four ODIs. The Hitman’s 92 against the West Indies in Mullanpur was especially important as he handled the early movement before attacking the bowlers. He is now looking firmly on course to be part of India’s 2027 World Cup plans.

However, Sunil Gavaskar was disappointed when Rohit fell for 92 because he wanted the senior opener to complete another ODI century. The right-hander currently has 35 ODI hundreds and will turn 40 when the ICC ODI World Cup 2027 begins.

The legendary Indian batter wants Rohit to finish his international career with more ODI centuries than his age. If Rohit plays until the World Cup, he would need to reach at least 41 ODI hundreds to achieve that special milestone.

Sunil Gavaskar said on the Star Sports Network, "The reason I was disappointed with Rohit getting out on 92 is that he didn't get a hundred, and he might possibly quit international cricket after the end of the ICC ODI World Cup 2027. And at that particular point in time, when he decides to call it a day, I personally would like Rohit to have more ODI hundreds than his age.”

The former Indian captain added, “Had he gotten a century in the third ODI, he would have moved closer to achieving that feat with his 36th hundred. For me, it's a special thing when a player's hundreds outnumber his age at retirement. It shows the kind of career they have had and the standard they have kept for so many years.”

Gavaskar also wanted to score as many Test centuries as his age before retirement at 38, but three dismissals in the 90s hampered his chances. So, he now wants Rohit to achieve this feat. Amid this, Shubman Gill gives no-nonsense verdict on Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli's future.

The 1983 World Cup winner further noted, “That is why I really want Rohit to reach that mark. In my last year of international cricket, I wanted to score as many Test centuries as my age, and I got out in the 90s three times. If I'd got those hundreds, then my centuries would have matched the age of my retirement, which was 38.”
