Bhuvneshwar Kumar got a surprising entry in the Indian cricket team for the T20Is against New Zealand. Will Mohammed Shami get his turn as well? Former Team India batter and Chennai Super Kings (CSK) legend, Suresh Raina, made a few valuable comments on the chances of Shami.

Shami is set to feature for the Bengal Cricket team in the Ranji Trophy 2026-27 match, as in previous seasons. He did well in the last season across all domestic tournaments. In IPL 2026, in multiple matches, the experienced fast bowler struck with the new ball in the first overs.

Mohammed Shami last played for India in 2025

It was hard to ignore such form, but the Ajit Agarkar-led selection committee managed to do so. As Agarkar is set to leave, there are thin chances of seeing Mohammed Shami back in the Men in Blue again. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is yet to announce the squads for the ODI and Test series against New Zealand.

Shami last played for the Indian cricket team in the Champions Trophy 2025 campaign, and his last appearance in the Whites was in the 2023 World Test Championship (WTC) Final against Australia.

Suresh Raina on Mohammad Shami's chances to play for India again

During a recent interaction, Suresh Raina stated that Mohammed Shami delivered well in domestic cricket, which deserves to be rewarded.

"Absolutely, I think he (Shami) has done well and played good domestic cricket too. Now it's Bhuvi's turn, aur Shami bhi aa rahe hai piche piche, tension mat lijiye (Shami is also right behind him, so don't worry). I hope the selectors give him an opportunity; he is doing really well," Raina said on the jersey launch of Indian Soft Ball Cricket League," Raina said.

The former Team India batter mentioned that making a comeback in the Indian cricket team at the age of 36 shows the character of Bhuvneshwar Kumar.

"Making it to the Indian team at the age of 36 shows character. He has been a very disciplined bowler and a very process-driven guy who has worked really hard on his body. I hope when they go to New Zealand, he will do very well; my best wishes are with him," Suresh Raina said on the comeback of Bhuvneshwar Kumar.

Mohammed Shami makes his aim clear

Meanwhile, Mohammed Shami is not concerned about the return of Kumar to the Indian cricket team. He aims to do well for Bengal in the Ranji Trophy 2026-27 season.

"Bhuvneshwar Kumar got the chance to play for India, and that’s good for him. But his selection doesn’t concern me. Wherever I get the chance to play, I will give my best. Right now, my focus is firmly on this Ranji match... if I don’t get the chance to play for India again, it’s not my loss," Shami told RevSportz.

Bengal is currently up against Delhi, and Mohammed Shami has already one wicket in his bag. He has dismissed Yash Dhull before lunch.
