India’s T20I captain Suryakumar Yadav has shut down recent criticism about Rohit Sharma’s fitness and captaincy. As the India National Cricket Team gears up for another major ICC final, Rohit Sharma’s leadership remains a key talking point.

The Men in Blue are undefeated in the ongoing ICC Champions Trophy 2025, and they are just one win away from clinching back-to-back ICC trophies following their triumphant T20 World Cup victory in 2024. India will face New Zealand in the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 final on March 9 in Dubai.

Rohit Sharma has etched his name in cricket history, becoming the first captain to reach the final of all four major ICC events since taking over the captaincy of the Indian cricket team. Apart from his leadership, Rohit as an opener has been instrumental in India’s success over the last two decades, but recently, discussions about his fitness have taken center stage.

The debate over his fitness intensified when a political leader from the Indian National Congress took a dig at Rohit’s fitness. Congress spokesperson Shama Mohamed labeled him “overweight” and called him “the most unimpressive captain India has ever had,” sparking controversy.

Amid the criticism, Suryakumar Yadav shut down concerns over his fitness and highlighted his immense contributions to Indian cricket. He praised Rohit’s leadership and dedication, stating that his captaincy record speaks for itself.

India’s T20I captain has pointed out that leading India to four ICC finals is a remarkable achievement, as well as emphasized how dedicated Rohit is to maintaining fitness. The star batter praised Rohit’s hard work and wished him luck for the upcoming Champions Trophy 2025 final against the Black Caps.

Suryakumar Yadav was quoted as saying by ANI, “If you see him as a captain, in the past four years he has taken the team to the finals of four ICC trophies, so it is a big thing. If a person has been playing cricket for 15-20 years, it is a big thing."

"I know how important fitness is for him. I have seen him closely; he works very hard during the franchise and international cricket. According to me, he is at the top, and I wish him all the best for the finals.”

Suryakumar Yadav backs India to win the Champions Trophy

Suryakumar is also confident that India will do well in the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 final against New Zealand at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium on Sunday, March 9.

The Indian skipper signed off by saying, “I have already said that we are playing good cricket. If we play the same brand of cricket, then the final is just another game.”

Notably, Suryakumar last played an ODI under Rohit Sharma's captaincy in the 2023 World Cup final against Australia in Ahmedabad. He was also part of India's victorious T20 World Cup 2024 campaign under Rohit's leadership. Suryakumar has also played a key role in Mumbai Indians' success over the years, winning multiple titles with Rohit as captain in the IPL.
