Team India captain Suryakumar Yadav opened up about the bizarre Asia Cup 2025 award presentation following their five-wicket victory over Pakistan. Suryakumar stated that India did not delay the ceremony and added that Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chairman Mohsin Naqvi left the stadium with the trophy.

India secured a five-wicket victory in a nail-biter at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium on Sunday. Rinku Singh smashed a boundary off Haris Rauf in the final over to guide his team to a win. The victory was overshadowed by controversy, like the two previous encounters between the sides in the tournament.

India refused to accept the Asia Cup Trophy from Mohsin Naqvi

The post-match presentation was delayed by an hour. Team India celebrated their victory without claiming the trophy. The Indian side refused to accept the award from Mohsin Naqvi, who serves as Pakistan’s interior minister, citing his past controversial statements and social media posts.

The Men in Blue wanted to receive the trophy from Emirates Cricket Board vice-chairman Khalid Al Zarooni. However, Naqvi left the stadium with the silverware, leaving the champions to celebrate without their official prize.

Two Indian players, Tilak Varma and Abhishek Sharma, received individual awards from tournament sponsors, but the main ceremony ended prematurely. Earlier in the tournament, India had also refused to shake hands with Pakistan players, including during the final.

Trophy Leke Bhaag Gaye Woh - Suryakumar Yadav

Speaking to The Indian Express, Suryakumar Yadav stated that his team did not delay the post-match presentation. He said that the players remained outside and did not go into the dressing room. Yadav also added that he saw Mohsin Naqvi leave with the trophy.

"We didn’t close the door and sit inside the dressing room. We didn’t make anyone wait for the presentation ceremony," Suryakumar Yadav told The Indian Express.

"Trophy leke bhaag gaye woh (They ran away with the trophy). That’s what I saw. I don’t know, some people were making a video of us, but we were standing. We didn’t go inside," he added.

No One From Government or BCCI Told Us Anything - Suryakumar Yadav

Suryakumar Yadav stated that Team India’s refusal to accept the Asia Cup trophy from Mohsin Naqvi was a decision made on the field, not under instructions from the BCCI or the government. He emphasized that no officials had directed the team regarding the trophy.

"First of all, let me make it clear, no one from the Government or the BCCI told us anything throughout the tournament that if someone gives a trophy, we won’t take it. We took that decision on our own on the ground," Suryakumar continued.

"They (ACC officials) were standing there on the stage, and we were standing below. I saw them talking on stage, and I don’t know the details of their chat. Some in the crowd started booing. And then we saw someone who was their representative taking the trophy and running away," he added.

Meanwhile, BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia confirmed that the board will file a formal complaint against Mohsin Naqvi for taking the Asia Cup trophy. Saikia described Naqvi’s actions as “unsporting” and expressed hope that the trophy and medals would be returned to India.
