India’s T20 captain Suryakumar Yadav admitted that the retirement of Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, and Ravindra Jadeja from the shorter format of the game left a massive void but said that the new generation is stepping up to keep the team on track.
Indian cricket is currently going through a major transition since the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024 triumph last year in the USA and Caribbean. After India ended the title drought by winning the T20 World Cup 2024, Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, and Ravindra Jadeja called time on their T20I careers.
It is difficult, but not impossible: Suryakumar Yadav on finding Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma and Ravindra Jadeja's replacements
With the next 2026 T20 World Cup on the horizon, Suryakumar Yadav said that it is very difficult to fill the shoes of Rohit, Kohli, and Jadeja, but the young talents like Abhishek Sharma and Tilak Varma are already showing promise and taking responsibility in the T20I cricket.
Suryakumar Yadav said in the India Today conclave, “To fill the shoes of such big players, I can't say that it is impossible, but it is difficult. Because players with skills keep coming. But it is very difficult to fill the shoes. Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, and Ravindra Jadeja. But someone has to take their place. And people will learn.”
According to Suryakumar, Abhishek Sharma has brought fresh energy as an opener in the void left by Rohit, while Tilak Varma is showcasing his ability to anchor the innings at No. 3. In the all-rounder department, the skipper said that the promising spinners are stepping up to carry forward the legacy of Jadeja.

However, Suryakumar said that replacing Rohit, Kohli, and Jadeja is possible, but it will take time, and he believes that the team is slowly but surely finding the right balance. He hopes they will have a settled squad for the upcoming ICC T20 World Cup 2024.
The star Indian batter further explained, “Players are coming. Like Rohit Bhai went, one Sharma went, so another Sharma came. Now Abhishek Sharma has come. Then Tilak Verma has come in at number three. He is taking responsibility. He has a glimpse of delivering India well. And then there is Jaddu Bhai. So, a spinner has come in his place.”
The train must keep running: Suryakumar Yadav on India’s post-Rohit, Kohli, Jadeja era
The Indian skipper said that it is impossible to match the experience and impact of these icons overnight, but the new generation is making sure the Indian cricket team remains a force to be reckoned with in the shorter format of the game.
Suryakumar signed off by saying, “So, it is difficult to fill those shoes, but we will get there. But slowly, it will take time. Right now, we can only say that some parts of the train have changed. But the train should continue to run. The train will continue to run.”
