While Team India are currently busy playing the ongoing ICC Champions Trophy 2025, the Indian team-management has pretty much set its sight on the 2027 World Cup.

India have not won the tournament since the historic victory on home soil in 2011. In 2023, the Men in Blue had qualified for the final before suffering a heartbreaking defeat at the hands of Australia. Head coach Gautam Gambhir has already made it clear that he has started planning for the mega event in 2027.

Right after being appointed the head coach last year, he had stated that both Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli would be a part of the Indian squad for the 2027 World Cup. Apart from Kohli and Rohit, the Gautam Gambhir-led coaching staff is reportedly backing another player for the marquee event.

Suryakumar Yadav one of the favorites to make a comeback

According to reports, the team management has still not given up on Suryakumar Yadav as far as his future in the ODI team is concerned. The right-handed batsman was given an opportunity to prove himself in ODIs in the past, but he failed to grab the opportunity.

Suryakumar Yadav has not played an ODI for Team India since the final of the 2023 World Cup. And although he is yet to play an ODI since Gautam Gambhir's appointment, he is still in contention for a place in the ODI team.

According to Sports Tak's Vikrant Gupta, the team management is still contemplating recalling Suryakumar Yadav.

Suryakumar Yadav's ODI career so far:

While Suryakumar Yadav has been one of the best T20I batsmen in the world for quite some time now, he has failed to replicate that performance in ODIs. The Mumbai star has played 37 ODIs so far and has scored 773 runs at an average of 25.76.

Gautam Gambhir eyes first ICC trophy as coach:

While Gautam Gambhir has won two ICC World Cups as a player, he is yet to lay hands on the coveted trophy as a coach. The former India opener has faced severe criticism for the way things have unfolded ever since he took charge of the team last year.

However, he is now just one win away from winning his first ICC trophy as a coach. Team India have qualified for the final of the ongoing ICC Champions Trophy and will be locking horns against New Zealand in the title-decider.

India have already defeated New Zealand once in the tournament and will be fancying their chances of beating them once again.

Gautam Gambhir can also become the first-ever Indian coach to win the Champions Trophy. While India have won the competition twice in the past, they were coached by overseas coaches on both the occasions.
